Our floral department makes beautiful arrangements right in our facility. We love sourcing materials from local Bay area vendors. #bayareacatering #bayareasmallbusinesses #fullservicecatering #springiscoming #springflowers
Once in a while, we like to profile one of our vendor friends. Today, we want you to meet Gene Hwang from Orange Photography. But chances are that if you are in the event industry you already know him. He answered some questions for us. Enjoy! 1. What made you specialize in event photography? I had always enjoyed photography since I was a kid and my dad used to share a slide show (on an actual slide carousel!) back in the day. Through high school and college, I was on y...earbook staff and worked at the school paper and had wanted to be a photojournalist. I didn't want to live in a small town to work my way up though so switched my major and then the internet happened so I worked building websites during the first dot com boom and when that collapsed, my friends and I decided that the future was digital in photography and that we could start a greener business avoiding the chemicals that were used in traditional film photography by starting a purely digital studio so we started off shooting weddings and events and have now narrowed our focus to just focusing on events and more business focused photography. 2. What is the wildest event you have ever photographed? Hm, those would be NDA ones of wealthy individuals. At one, things got crazy later in the evening and people were jumping into the pool and throwing in expensive props. We were encouraged to photograph still and the planner was like - the props were pretty fancy big pieces, but the client agreed to pay for them. And many others that I can't really talk about. 3. What is your current favorite San Francisco restaurant? Well I am not a fancy guy though I do enjoy some Michelin starred spots from time to time but if you looked at where I ate the most I'd say it would be Balompie Cafe No 3 Inc on 18th St. in SF. I love their pupusas and their sister location is also fantastic. I go so often that many of the servers already have memorized my order! 4. What is your current favorite food trend you have seen at events? Hm, it's not super new but I have liked the mashed potato bars/cocktails. I love mashed potatoes and they are a pretty universal food item and having toppings you can put on to customize them is fun and lets you keep it vegetarian or add some bacon to add some pop. 5. What food trend do you wish would go away? Well this kind of depends on the crowd and maybe I'd say the overall idea would be making sure you are doing things appropriate for your audience. For example if it's a huge event with tons of people coming through, maybe don't have something too complicated like a dropper with some liquid that you pour onto something or food that a server is preparing at a station that requires several steps to be ready - to keep lines moving. At something more intimate, higher touch can work better I feel. Though really the goals of the event should drive things.
Over here, we are pretty passionate about wine. That why we are excited to hear that the San Francisco Wine Center has a new location and has started its famous wine classes again! We can't wait to host wine pairing events at their new facilities, but in the meantime, here's their calendar of wine events. http://www.sfwinecenter.com/classes.php #eventvenues #wine #winepairing #vendorpartners #sanfranciscovenues #sanfranciscocatering #sanfranciscoevents

We have been talking a lot this week over here about "pain points" in event planning. Those road blocks you hit time after time. For example; not been able to work with the same event staff all the time. What are your pain points? We would love to hear what they are, and if you have any suggestions, please comment! if anything, the event industry is full of extremely supportive and creative folks. #eventprofs #painpoints #eventplanning
