Helpful Butterfly Friday tip! Be careful when handling Passiflora vines as you might find some friendly pollinators. It’s the host plant for the Gulf Fritillary caterpillar (Agraulis vanillae). Butterfly expert Bryan Burks, a member of the Arboretum’s horticultural and garden team, spotted this caterpillar while taking care of the smaller plants in our butterfly hub.
As we wrap up Latino Heritage Month, we’d like to send a special shout out to long-time Arboretum supporter Gilbert Resendez, who turned his love for plants as a youth into an influential horticultural career at Monrovia Growers. For two decades he and his wife, Terese, have generously supported the garden. The Arboretum is an oasis in the middle of all of this development, said Resendez, who was honored as Horticulturist of the Year in 2011 by Southern California Horticu...lture Society. You can’t believe how you can get off the freeway and in a half mile you are in nature. In 2002, he was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Arboretum Foundation and served as President in 2011 and 2012. He continues as an honorary Arboretum trustee. Resendez began his horticultural career with Monrovia Growers in 1962, starting out as a pruning craftsman. Over the years he rose through the ranks and executive positions to become president in 2004 and managing director in 2008. Throughout his career, he has helped introduce new plants, several being his own discoveries, to amateur and professional gardeners. Thank you Gilbert and Terese from everyone at the Arboretum!
