A recent study led by KPSOM lecturer David Glass, PhD, and co-authored by Dr. Michael Kanter, Chair of Clinical Science, showed that when patients made their end-of-life care wishes known to loved ones, physicians satisfactorily carried them out 90 percent of the time. https://bit.ly/3mHjklJ

During Deaf History month, our students had the opportunity to reflect on the work of Asian American artist Christine Sun Kim, who has been deaf since birth. Students viewed videos as part of an interactive exhibit, shared their thoughts about the artwork, and learned more about deaf history in the U.S.

KPSOM students had the incredible opportunity to take what they’re learning in the classroom and apply it in the field. This past weekend, students helped administer 5,900+ COVID-19 vaccines at the California Polytechnic State University vaccination hub. In all, a record-breaking 4M shots were given across the U.S. on April 3. A huge thank-you to the Kaiser Permanente physicians and KPSOM faculty who helped prepare our students for this historic day.

I didn’t really know what to expect, but REACH week for me was a fantastic way to decompress after a challenging week of finals, as well as a great introduction to practices of self-care, well-being, and presence within oneself and toward others. Students share their experience during REACH (Reflection, Education, Assessment, Coaching, Health, and well-being), a five-module learning series developed to help students grow personally and professionally. https://bit.ly/2G0ZzEG

No one should get into medical school because of their race or ethnicity, but to ignore those characteristics fails to understand the context of applicants’ lives. Dean Mark Schuster and Associate Dean for Admissions Lindia Willies-Jacobo wrote this powerful piece advocating for yes on California’s Proposition 16. See it here - https://lnkd.in/gCh-6Fb

I not only want to be a source of encouragement and support for the future generation of Latinx physicians, but I also want to be an agent of change in my very own community by investing my gained skills and knowledge. KPSOM Student Lucero Amaral shares her journey as a Latinx woman and future physician. I am from California’s Central Valley and grew up in a supportive Mexican immigrant household. I am the first in my family to attend college, and now medical school! Whi...le growing up I was met with several barriers, including unsupportive school counselors, lack of guidance, and feelings of insecurity. Since I had no idea how to apply to college, much less medical school, these barriers almost deterred me from reaching my goal. Lucero says she wants to use her privilege as a medical student and future physician, to uplift others who may encounter similar barriers. I understand the difference a physician that speaks your language and understands your culture can make on your health and overall well-being, therefore the potential impact I can have continues to propel me forward. Once I found my internal motivations and strengths, the external disapproval did not matter anymore and this realization has gotten me here, a first-year medical student at KPSOM and a step closer to becoming a physician.

Diversity in medicine is important because it provides the opportunity for individuals to receive equitable care that considers their lived experiences. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating 10 amazing LatinX pioneers in medicine: https://bit.ly/3hOeMps
