Kayamanan Ng Lahi Philippine Folk Arts will share traditional dances and costumes, as well as history and stories. Kayamanan, a critically acclaimed non-profit based in Los Angeles, is committed to presenting, promoting, and preserving the richness and diversity of Philippine culture through dance and music, to educate, entertain and enrich.

One year ago, on this day, we followed public health guidelines and canceled in-person workshops, also known as KNL Sundays. Later that week, our staff met via Zoom, pooled our collective knowledge, and put together #KNLinTheCloud for the following Sunday. And we’ve been going strong ever since, providing a constant space for our members, old and new, near and far, to learn and dance and celebrate. Today in our tribu, we took a moment to mark the milestone, and also to meditate on the lives, livelihoods, and learning lost over the last year. To recognize that for so many, life will never be normal again. From our fam to yours, we send you light and love and strength as we move onward together. Mas malakas tayo pag sama-sama!

Lucca is a 10th grade scholar who joined KNL 4 years ago with no dance experience and has since not only performed all over LA but also created a documentary as part of our Pamana Media Project. Ever the wordsmith, Lucca delivered the valedictory speech for his middle school graduation and was one of 70 Angelenos invited to reflect on 2020 as part of Grand Park’s Ground Our Present, Dot Our Future art installation. From ages 5-85, Kayamanan Ng Lahi members are not only danc...ers and culture bearers, we are Angelenos who work in education, health care, hospitality, and every other industry that keeps LA running like a world-class cityeven through 2020’s challenges. Yvette is an oncology nurse and founding member, dancing and learning with KNL since the first workshop in November 1990! What ambahan would you write about 2020? An ambahan is a form of Philippine poetry originating from the Hanunuo Mangyans of Oriental Mindoro. Usually written on bamboo in the Surat Mangyan, a centuries-old, pre-Spanish script, an ambahan features a meter of seven syllable lines with rhythmic end-syllables. Although we couldn’t gather in person this year for our annual KNL holiday party, it didn’t stop us from meeting virtually on zoom in the spirit of the holidays and to... also celebrate KNL’s 30th anniversary. We celebrated online by opening up the video archives to rewatch some of KNL’s milestone performances, and with fun games and activities. One game we played was a group poetry slam contest where our members were assigned teams and had 5 minutes to compose impromptu poems like a haiku or ambahan. Reflecting on 2020 We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in Ground Our Present, Dot Our Future on display now until 1.24.21 at Grand Park. This public art installation features reflections about 2020 from cultural organizations - including our KNL members - and community members of ages 8 to 88 years old. Although it was a challenging year, Angelenos strengthened and sharpened their values; a year we allowed vulnerability to be defined as strength; the year of ...traumatic but collective change.
