Sometimes I have the privilege of working with gemstones that are so incredible and rare that I don't feel any design can do it justice. For me, design is a del...icate balancing act between adding enough beauty to make it an attractive, rich design, while never taking away from the natural beauty of the gem. Generally, my designs are a bit more classic than this one. But this gem is so amazing, I really wanted to do something unique with it. Butterflies hold a special place in my heart. They go through the most mindblowing transformation, just like a rough gemstone is transformed into a faceted beauty, just like a design goes from concept in one's mind, to sketches on paper to 3 dimensional works of art, and just like we go through transformations of the heart, coming out on the other end a magnificent changed being. I think I drew 30 or 40 design options for this stone, and this was the chosen design. In addition to the rich purple, the masterfully cut center stone - an unheated Tanzanite (Zoisite) cut by the ridiculously talented Jeff Hapeman (bravo Jeff ) - throws some lovely shades of blue, and even some light lavender pinks. So I scoured the gem show for moonstones, looking to accent the wings with a touch of blue adularescence. 1.50mm moonstones to be exact...the smallest moonstones I've ever sourced. I had to go to EVERY booth at AGTA & GJX at the Tucson Gem Show, the largest gem show in the world, to find these miniature treasures! (No joke...every. single. booth...2mm were a dime a dozen, but not 1.50mm) Then onto the perfect shade of lavender pink sapphires. And of course, a hint of diamond to frame everything in luscious sparkly shimmer. Designing this piece was an incredible honor, as it was made for an organization called Somewhere in the Rainbow (SITR). SITR is a collection of rare gems and jewelry that travels the country and is displayed in museums and universities in order to educate people about the world of colored gems. Designers are invited in to choose a gemstone that speaks to them and create a finished piece. I couldn't be more honored to design on behalf of this organization. Owner Greg (aka my handsome husband) presented me with this beautiful white gold handmade butterfly necklace on Mother's Day. Butterflies are very special to me I couldn't have been more surprised or taken aback. Those of you who know me, know I'm actually not a huge jewelry fan (who'da thunk) I do, however, love art & designing & gemstones. BUT something I love even more so than designing a piece myself, is sentiment. I'm a total sucker for it. My favorite pieces of jewelry are those that belonged to my Grandma This necklace couldn't be more special because of the thought & heart that went into making it. Thank you & great job, Babe!
