As a Corporate Yoga Teacher: how do we use yoga poses to help our students de-stress safely, quickly, and deeply? Here are my tips: 1. People at work tend to hold tension in the neck, shoulders, back, and hips. Use poses that address tension in those parts including soothing neck stretches, simple yet repeatable shoulder stretches (that students can later use at their desks is always a perk), spinal enlongators (is that a word?) and spinal twists to release stress in the back..., back strengtheners to help people hold better posture, and hip openers that open all parts of the hips (think full circumference)! 2. Teach poses that help to soothe the nervous system like simple forward folds including standing forward bend (uttanasana), down dog with a block under the forehead, child's pose (which I often call adult's pose because I think we need it even more than kids), side bends because they tend to feel really, really good, poses on the back because lying on your back can promote a calm, and if you can, legs up the wall (is there anything better for soothing your nervous system)? 3. Add rhythmic breathing with simple poses to create a meditative, mental quieting. I recommend simple arm movements linked with breath, half sun salutations, sun salutation sans the vinyasa, and really simple flows where it's hard for students to fall out of alignment. How do we teach corporate yoga without props? I know, workspaces where yoga is held may be sans props including blocks, straps, and sometimes even mats. Here are 4 of my best tips: 1. For poses where you need a belt, use towels if they're accessible, extra pieces of clothing, or carefully advise them to use mac power chords (i've had a student do this; it was effective, hilarious, but smart). 2. When you need a block like in triangle or side angle pose, instruct your students... to place their elbow or palm on their shin or inner thigh. if there are books close by, stack books for stable height. 3. When you want to create a supported heart opener over blocks, have them lay over a rolled up mat instead. This is also a great way to place students in relaxation - place the roll under the knees in corpse. 4. Be creative in using available wall space and the floor as support. Examples: have them do half moon on the wall, half down dog on the wall, standing split on the wall, dolphin against the wall, and king Arthur you guessed it, on the wall. You can leverage the floor and wall creatively by doing some shoulder and chest stretches like crossing straight arms across the chest and laying on the floor chest down (kind of like double pigeon for both shoulders) or stand and take an arm in a goal post shape, place your lower arm on the wall and turn your legs away from the wall.
