REMINDER TIME: Sac, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo Counties are CLOSED next Wednesday for Veteran's Day - Banks will be too Therefore NO recordings or wires will occur that day. Please prepare your clients . . . our offices will be open, however. Feel free to call us to say "Hi" and get status of your escrow ALSO take note of Thanksgiving Week - our office will be closed on Thanksgiving and the day after along with most recorders offices. Plan your closings accordingly.

Title Talk: Wire fraud is such a hot topic these days that I just have to touch on it. I recently heard that one of my colleagues was speaking with an agent whose buyer received an email at the last minute with wire instructions. Unfortunately, he didn’t confirm the information with escrow and sent his funds via the new instructions. Luckily for him, he wired out after cutoff on a Friday and they were able to intercept the wire the next day as soon as the agent heard what hap...pened. It used to be pretty apparent when it was a scam with typos and misspellings, but the crooks have become very savvy and have also been using email addresses that look almost identical to escrow’s email address, slipping in an extra dot or combining some letters to look like others. It’s heartbreaking to watch someone lose all that money when all they want is to buy a home. Please remind your clients to verify ALL wire instructions prior to sending in funds and instruct them to call the number they have on FILE for escrow, not whatever phone number shows in the email. Criminals can pose as your real estate agent, settlement agent or other trusted professional and provide false instructions for wiring mortgage closing funds.
