very good explanation for those who make decisions based on human emotion instead of the facts.

Yesterday, while presenting another private clinic to a wonderful group of clients, I asked each and every one to tell *us* what they individually expected to g...et from our program. Since I now know their goals and expectations, I can better help them along their way towards their horsemanship dreams. Below, are *my* goals and expectations of what I plan to do with each and every horse that comes into my small circle of influence. Staying true to these, regardless of any initial resistance, will keep these concepts at the forefront of our goals and assure our success. After all, to paraphrase a great quote, "...I've never met a horse that would not understand these concepts..." - but I've met plenty of humans who don't. FOR THE GOOD OF THE HORSE, JWW.

Amazing day at the Poway Working Equitation Show yesterday. Definitely some historic records were made. One being this is the first recognized WE show in Southe...rn California for the year. Yes, the show season should have started Dec 1, 2019 but thank you pandemic our first show was today Aug 1, 2020. Can’t thank show manager Janice Kall and judge Polly Limond enough for braving the heat and Covid19 to allow the riders to do what they love. But the records I would like to share is that there were 4 Kiger Mustangs in the show and 5 BLM Branded Mustangs. Four (4) Kiger Mustangs in the same open competition is a record. (Only beat by the Kiger Fest competitions which ended 10 years ago). The tally of awards for the day were 4 - 1st Place, 5 2nd Place, 2 - Overall division highpoint Champions and 1 - Overall division highpoint Reserve Champion. Kiger Zapata KCA, Kiger Dios Estoy Aqui KCA, Kiger Ginny Siempre Bailando KCA, and Rio are all KHAR registered Kigers that exemplify and promote the Kiger Breed. The true trainability of the Kiger was proven yet again as this was the first WE show for not only two of the Kigers but their novice riders as well. Brand new to Working Equitation did not stop Chris and Rio from becoming the L1 Introductory level Champions. The first event of any kind for Kiger Ginny with a little over 90 days training had her come in 3rd in her Dressage test and 4th overall also in the Introductory Division. Only 1 point separated Stallions Kiger Zapata KCA and Kiger Dios Estoy Aqui KCA who were awarded, respectively, the L4 Intermediate A Champion and Intermediate A Reserve Champion Awards for the day. The 5 BLM Branded Mustangs (3 of which were Kigers) brought home 5 1st place, 5 2nd place, 2 4th place, 2 - Overall Championships and 2 - Overall Reserve Championships. Not bad for a hot August day in pandemic Southern California to set some records! See more

A red ribbon on your horse’s tail could be a red flag you are trying to control the environment around you, not the horse under you. As a youth, it was common f...or a rider to have a red ribbon in their horse’s tail, if the horse had poor social skills and would kick or act aggressive at other horses. This makes perfect sense if the rider is a child. A child may not have the multitasking skills to control a horse, stay aboard and notice changes in its behavior all at the same time. And/or may not be strong enough to keep the horse focused and on task. That is perfectly logical. But fast forward to adult hood, and this scenario becomes something much different. There is an insightful saying: That everything your horse does right is your fault and everything your horse does wrong is your fault. The definition of a Control Freak: is 'one who controls a person, group, or system to an unnecessary level. A person whose controlling behavior is manifested in the ways that he or she acts to dictate the order of things in a social situation'. This can also be the definition of a fearful rider, one lacking confidence or one unable to properly control their horse. So the first thing you do is shift the blame to those around you. If you or a fellow horse rider has started the habit of asking the riders around you to not get so close, not ride so fast, not pass on that side, not flap their jacket, or telling everyone that your horse does not like: tall horses, grey ponies, windy days, riding first, riding last or a host of other excuses for you to validate why you should be allowed to control everyone else’s environment instead of fixing your own. A necessity to start controlling the environment around you because you have become afraid of the environment you are sitting on means it is time to seek help. If you do not know how to fix the things your horse does wrong and think there is no fix, so you make up excuses for their behavior, it just means you do not have enough tools in your toolbox. You need to have the courage to admit you need more tools and seek them with an open mind for a broader education. Has your fear or lack of understanding turned you into a displaced control freak? If you display the red flag of worry, the answer is yes. Please seek a new way. Topic: "Schooling our eyes" What can be a criteria to see if there is still more weight on the front? I have been commenting pictures of my students for many ...years now. I am a visual person and I have learned so much by going threw all these pictures and teaching so many different types of horses. Instead of writing long articles or drawings, which can be far from reality, I think pictures or videos are showing "the proof in the pudding". I have been asked recently, what I mean by saying: "have a look at the weight carrying diagonal pair of legs in this trot moment and you will see there is still slightly more weight on the front." It is easy to see in trot, the best would be on a straight line (on a circle the inside lateral pair has always more weight ), but once your eyes are a bit aware of it, you will see it even in sideway movements, in walk or in canter. For me it is highly important to emphasize here that this is NOT MEANT to criticize. (Especially not my students here in the pictures who are doing a brilliant job and who are riding their horses with a lot of feel!) For me, It is a constant process to seek for the best position and to work on the raising of the withers between the shoulders in our daily work with horses- no matter if it's arena work, hacking, jumping. The lifting can change within seconds, an optimum is hardly ever consistent for a long time, but my goal should be to improve the horizontal balance constantly in my training. For some horses with difficult built (also depending on the breed) it can take years! For others it's more natural. Even more terrifying to see those excellent horses we have been breeding nowadays showing a trot like on that first picture. If my horse is showing a "three- legged- trot" seemingly highly "advanced", I can definitely say that something went terribly wrong in my training. (Veronika Bühn)
