GRASSROOTS ACTION: Contact Congress and USDA to Demand Sound Science in the US Dietary Guidelines CONTACT USDA & CONGRESS BY AUGUST 13 The federal government is currently updating guidance on healthy diets, called the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). The DGA is established every five years and the USDA is finalizing the guidelines for 2020-2025. For decades, the DGA has provided evidence-based, practical information about diet and health, including information on alcoh...ol. Since 1990, the DGA has advised adults who choose to drink to do so in moderation, and has defined moderation as no more than one drink a day for adult women and two drinks a day for adult men. Now, an advisory committee is proposing that the government slash the definition of moderate drinking in half for men, while failing to provide meaningful scientific evidence to support the change. In fact, the advisory group's 835-page report admits that "only 1 study examined differences among men comparing 1 vs 2 drinks." This is far from the preponderance of evidence that would be needed to reverse decades of U.S. guidance that defines an adult man having two glasses of wine at a family meal as drinking in moderation. WineAmerica has already begun to advocate against any such change. In July we sent a joint letter with the Wine Institute opposing any changes, and we will be submitting public comments to the USDA and HHS before the comment period closes on August 13. In addition to our comments we need you and your colleagues and industry partners to GET ENGAGED and make sure that Congress and the USDA understand why this would be a disservice to consumers.
