Hi MBKU Fam, it's #MBKUAmbassador Joanne Vuong! With the high pace structure of grad school, we often forget to look at our surroundings, so this is reminder to take study breaks! Although the air quality is not the greatest right now because of the fires, once it improves, take advantage of a quick stroll through campus after studying at the lecture halls or practicing in the labs. Remember to take it a day at a time , take your breaks and wear a mask

Hi everyone, #MBKUAmbassador Tiffany Khieu here! How are you all doing? I'm currently a P4 on my 3rd Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotation in Acute Care in Fullerton - close to home base! My previous two rotations have been quite the challenge, so I thought it would be nice to capture memories of them through flowers. To everyone who is struggling right now: no matter how tough it gets, remember flowers can bloom in adversity. See you all in another post! BONUS PIC: Here is my current remote set-up. A chaotic, beautiful mess.

#MBKUAmbassador Joanne Vuong here! This is the last day of Academy at Home 2020 and many of us optometry students and faculty alike have learned so much from the hundreds of CEs provided. The session, What Optometrists Need to Know about Human Trafficking in US, has been very insightful and can be applied to all of MBKU. Health services is the #3 point of access for those who are trafficked, either labor or sex traffic. A common myth is that victims aren’t all...owed to leave their trafficker’s custody, but that is absolutely not true as 88% of healthcare providers examined victims while they were being trafficked. Another common myth is that victims will ask for help when given the opportunity, but that is also not true due to fear, shame, Stockholm syndrome, or just simple denial of being a victim. If you want to learn more about Human Trafficking, then logon to the event portal and watch its webcast even after the session has ended! See more

Dr. Michael Sellers ’78 and his wife Elizabeth made a donation to Southern California College of Optometry of $1 million, an extraordinary gift that is in many ways a measure of his pride in the education he received at SCCO, his appreciation for what the profession of optometry has afforded him, and his desire to give future optometrists support that can change their lives. Congratulations to Dr. Sue Cotter on receiving the 2020 Theia Award of Excellence in Education. Here she is in action! She has been a teacher and a mentor to many optometrists for nearly four decades, and her primary research interests are related to clinical management strategies for strabismus, amblyopia, convergence insufficiency and childhood refractive error. Dr. Cotter quotes Maya Angelou: ’When you learn, teach; and when you get, give,’ and that rings true to me and sums up why I do what I doteach. You can watch Dr. Cotter accept her award during the virtual ceremony presentation at https://www.womeninoptometry.com//2020-theia-awards-of-ex/

Ryan Funai shared how #Academy20 has been going so far, "Academy 2020 is virtual this year and better than ever! Students don’t have to worry about travel costs or a conflicting academic schedule. We get to watch some of our favorite professors from SCCO display their brilliance through their research. At the same time we find ourselves in the same Zoom rooms with our professors learning about the latest advancements and technology of optometry. Looking forward to these next couple of weeks thanks to the @aaopt "

Last week, CSHP and C/APhA student chapters hosted a networking event, "Find My Match," to connect current students with MBKU faculty and CSHP and C/APhA pharmacists. Thanks to their innovative use of virtual meeting rooms, the event was a fun and successful way to help students find their "match" and learn more about their options in the vast range of pharmacy specialties, such as psychiatric, industry, infectious disease, veterinary, informatics, residency and more!
