Since oil was discovered in Kern County in 1899, the region has been one of the world’s top oil producers. More than a billion gallons of oil have come from our major oil fields. This derrick is a copy of the hundreds of wooden rigs that once dotted the Kern County landscape. In cable tool drilling, a cable lowers and drops a large metal drill bit to break up the ground digging a well into the earth. #kerncountymuseum #kerncountyhistory

Lori Brock at Home With their beady eyes, leathery wings and razor-sharp fangs, bats seem very spooky, yet they are actually very helpful! More than 500 plant species depend on bats for pollination and bats provide excellent natural pest control. Hurray for bats! Today you and your kids will create your own bat project. You will need a bat printable printed on white cardstock, markers, colored pencils or crayons, an extra-fine sharpie, scissors, and black or colorful card...stock or construction paper.
