Spring photos this week.
This is the floating base of the raft that provides a safe place above water for the Ridgway’s rail especially during nesting season. This is needed because the habitat where the rails naturally build their floating nests of hollow cordgrass stems is not healthy enough at Kendall-Frost to support their nests. The ReWild Mission Bay plan is working to improve and expand this habitat to save these and other wildlife. Want to learn more about the Ridgway’s rail? Post your questions and comments.

San Diego Audubon Society Restoration Assistant is working with us in taking care of the native plants at Kendall- Frost Marsh. In this photo she is transplanting the plant called Suaeda californica. On Sunday March 14 will we put them in the ground. Want to learn more about this plant? click here https://calscape.org/loc-Califor/Suaeda%20californica(%20)
Have you ever thought why at Kendall - Frost Marsh we use Rafts? Rafts are used to protect chicks from predators. That is why in these 2 photos you can see that our amazing volunteers are refurbishing this raft with a new basket cover (handmade in Patzcuaro, México!) plus some fan palm fronds for added cover. Remember that it is now the nesting season for the Ridgway’s rail so please keep your cats at home. Today is World Wildlife Day...you can protect wildlife right here in the middle of San Diego in the Kendall-Frost Marsh Reserve: keep your housecats indoors, don't use chemicals in your gardens, don't wash your car in the street, minimize light and noise ... and enjoy the sights and sounds of the wetlands!
