Oakland City Council passed a resolution recognizing Oakland Entrepreneurs in celebration of Oakland Small Business Week, April 29-May 5, 2018 Whereas, the City of Oakland was built and continues to be supported by the... dreams of entrepreneurs who dared to chart their own paths so that now the majority of Oakland's businesses are small businesses; in fact, 92% of Oakland businesses are small businesses that employ 20 or fewer employees; and Whereas, Oakland businesses have been recognized as innovative committee leaders at local, regional and national levels; and Whereas, District 6 is honoring Kay Chesterfield, a leading provider of reupholstery services and a custom fabricator of pillows and cushions for residential and commercial clients in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Kay Chesterfield stands in solidarity with #fashionrevolution, a global movement that is fighting for a fashion industry that values people, the environment, creativity, and profit in equal measure. This global movement hosts its annual #whomademyclothes Campaign on the anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, April 24, 2013, when 1,138 favorite workers were killed. We believe in their vision to celebrate fashion as a positive force by raising awareness of the industry...'s pressing issues, and show that change is possible. We support this journey to a more ethical and sustainable future. We're a 96-year-old workshop supporting fully benefited green jobs that reupholster, remake, and revitalize worn furniture--extending its life and keeping it out of the landfill. This is Gonzalo Torres, our workshop foreman, with 30+ years in the trade and with our company. We're so grateful for his leadership and expertise.
