After lockdown number 3, it’s So great to be back in the salon, creating beautiful hair. Today on my client Sara, we decided it was time to up her blonde factor. Like many of my women her hair was almost 75 to 80% gray, but that little bit of natural color left behind and made the hair kind of lackluster and needing a boost. After a bleaching and one of my favorite toners she left looking and feeling fabulous and definitely had a wow moment. ... Goodbye 2020. It was a beautiful year...sort of. I never dreamed as I was told the salon would be closing in March of this last year what would lie ahead. In fact the entire country closed. And fast. ... Stunned at the news I was seeing on tv, and not quite sure what to do next, my thoughts went to my work and all of my clients. I love my work and it’s a big part of who and what I am and have become. I have worked my entire adult life. Never took a dime from unemployment. As hairdressers we don’t get sick pay, vacation pay, or certainly no one is matching my 401K( if I even had one). I have loved what I do. It’s provided an amazing life with lots of hard work and building amazing relationships with clients, many who have become great friends and extended family. My teacher in beauty school back in (1980-something) told me, Josh, as long as you have a comb and scissors you will never starve and can go anywhere in the world you want. She was right. As most teachers usually are. This would be a year that felt in some way I was returning to my roots. And there were lots of them out there. Things slowed down, a lot. I moved slower through my work (when we weren’t on one of the 3 lockdowns). I became very protective of all of you. And I thank you for trusting in me. To those that stood by me, followed me from the salon, to my yard, back to the salon, and then back to my yard again. To those that sent me some money, not for their next hair service but because they said ,I know how difficult this year has been for you. To those that kept me busy in March and April and May and even now with my haircolor kits, and to those that made me weep when they whispered in my ear while I was washing their hair in the sink, You are the first person to touch me, in 6 months. As they hadn’t left their home since March. We did it. And we did it together. Through masks, and tears, and beautiful smiles we created some beautiful hair. To new clients and last clients, to the salon owners that held on with all their might to keep the doors open. From washing hair at my house outside with the garden hose, to blow drying in 120 weather. We did it. I’m a bit saddened to end the year on lockdown again but full of hope and more hope for an exciting ever changing New Year. I thank you and send my love to you all. Even during the worst of times you all remind me everyday why I love what I do. Entering my 36th year next year in the industry, I love our community. Feeling so great to be back in the salon. Seeing my clients again is giving me such joy. It was definitely color day today with no less than 3 blonde makeovers. Having been unable to come in my client had let her natural color grow out. We discussed many options and decided to let her continue to grow it out. She has some gorgeous natural silver streaks up front. But it was fighting against the previous golden shades that had to be removed. A full head of highlights to elim...inate the gold and I left her natural hair to now grow in without the hard line that happens when you’re growing color out. We may go back and add a few darker pieces to mimic her natural color pattern but we loved this result. A clean French bob topped it off. Color is so subjective and personal to everyone. I feel so great when my clients trust me to take them through the process. We’re back!! Reopening salons in the state announced today by the Governor, for this Monday, August 31st. As a reminder masks are required for the entire service and we will be adhering to all the state and city protocols just like we did when we we opened the first time back in May. Temperatures taken, socially distanced in the salon, every area sanitized before and after each client and disposable capes and masks for each client. ...
