Did you know...Many members of the PTA have been working together for much of the summer to talk about what we can do to make this year just as good as every other year. When Jose Ortega underwent ADA construction a few years back, it was a weird year. Even though we all still went to school every day, there was some separation, isolation and general lack of community. We don't want that to happen again. The PTA is busy coming up with creative ideas to keep our JOES families ...together while we are apart. You can help! Have ideas? Contact us. Want to pitch in? We welcome any extra help. Start today by joining the PTA. Hey SF Families - In case you didn't see the update on SFUSD, here is some info. Link to the SFUSD website about Fall learning update: https://www.sfusd.edu/annou/2020-07-10-fall-learning-update... Link to the presentation of the recommendation to the BOE: https://drive.google.com//101DzS86U98VUmLbF12qXCwAA3L/view Screenshot is of one slide that speaks to their recommendation. It looks to me that SFUSD is recommending full distance learning starting Aug 17 and then gradually moving into a hybrid model. Editing to add: This is not the final plan, just the high-level recommendation for now!

For those of you who couldn't attend the SFUSD Town Hall tonight, here are some highlights (very informal, just info I thought I could share). It was led by the President of the Board of Education, the Superintendent, two members of the Dept of Public Health, and someone who runs ThoughtExchange, the platform used for parents to input questions/suggestions. There have been a few workgroups composed of personnel from the school district, parks and rec, public library, departme...nt of public health, etc. that have been brainstorming, analyzing data and coming up with solutions for the Fall. Some major concerns voiced parents: Students will fall behind academically, social isolation for students, health and safety of students, family, staff and teachers. As long as cases are on the rise, the Department of Public Health will not allow schools (both public and independent) to reopen. There are no announcements as of today. However, the superintendent will make high level recommendations to the board on the 14th of this month, and then the final plan will be released to the public on the 28th of July. This Friday, the superintendent's high-level recommendation will be posted on the SFUSD website (I am not sure of the exact location, sorry!). The high level recommendations should give us all some information on the direction that we are headed. They did not mention whether the recording will be available to view online.

SFUSD is joining the world in celebration of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Cel-Liberation Day, which commemorates June 19, 1865: the d...ay when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the enslaved were now free. Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while also encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. In San Francisco public schools, educators celebrate the achievement of our African American and Black students every day, and strive for our schools to be welcoming and safe learning environments that empower each and every student to thrive in a changing world. Juneteenth 2020 comes at a time when 400 years of systemic oppression and underlying racism are at the forefront of national dialogue. As conversations turn to action and our societies continue to evolve, SFUSD remains committed to creating a more just world through the way schools educate and nurture our most vulnerable children. Founded in 2015, the African American Achievement & Leadership Initiative (AAALI) exists to provide opportunities, guidance and resources to African American students, families and educators. Through programs such as Black Star Rising, which provides summer STEM enrichment courses and access to internships, and the Manhood Development Program, which mentors African American male students in areas of Black Excellence and academic achievement, AAALI has opened doors for SFUSD students in many new ways.
