Habits are a funny thing. There are intentions that we want to set for things they we want to be doing, and then there are intentions we set for things we feel we should be doing. I’m enjoying a quiet morning, alone in my favorite room of my house (being home alone is rare), journaling and drinking my tea. ... Journaling is always one of those things I think I should do but don’t actually make the time. There’s no good reason for that. And when I do journal, I actually love it, on so many levels. So there’s the interesting question I have for myself (and others) about intentional living: why do you do the things that you do?? Why do you keep doing things you know you shouldn’t?? And whose narrative is it saying you should or shouldn’t?? I’ve been thinking a lot about intentional living as our Covid restrictions are lifting and life is beginning to resemble a semblance of normal. I don’t want to rush back to the way things were. The way things were didn’t totally work for me. So as I consider the bigger things, like how to fundamentally spend my time, energy, money, and attention, I’m considering the small things too, like journaling, or how much time I spend on my phone... Anyone else consider how they consciously engage in their day-to-day, moment-to-moment energy, time and attention? I’m all about teaching how to get unstuck. But the first step to getting unstuck is recognizing you’re even stuck. I’m stuck in some habits I’d like to change, and the best part is that I have 100% control and agency around those decisions. Anc like I always say, it’s got to start with awareness. #awareness #habits #journaling #consciousliving #intentionalliving #intentions #getunstuck #mindfulness #mindfulliving #journeyforward

I say this all the time: You can't change what you're not aware of. The first step to getting unstuck is ALWAYS going to be awareness. Without the awareness of the fact that you are stuck, and where you are stuck, you will likely, yes...stay stuck. And yet awareness is not the end - it's only the beginning; once you are aware of where you are stuck comes the decision of what to do with that information...... You might choose to stay stuck, because it's familiar and you know how to do it. Or you might choose to take the difficult steps (they are difficult at first, but do get easier over time) towards creating a new way of living your life, one in which your mindset has likely opened to believing change is possible, that you are worthy of achieving it, and that you are capable of creating a new way. Because here is the truth: it's your birthright to be living a fulfilling life. Yes, it's true! Even if you aren't there now, it's possible. And it all starts with awareness of where you are stuck that is preventing you from living that life you envision. This is the path to Journey Forward. I’ve been practicing more of what I preach lately, and I’ve really needed it. The pandemic has worn us down, and it’s looked different for different people. For me, I poured myself into being in service of others. ... My client load doubled, I launched a membership and published a book. I’m a single mom to my two teenage daughters, I host a weekly podcast, and have been working hard creating 4 new online mini courses, a new assessment and live Journey Forward Method program (launching soon!). I’m tired. I need to slow down. I need to move more, get out, breathe fresh air, and when safe, connect with others. I couldn’t have kept going at this pace for much longer. And I’m not going to. I have hired a new team to help me take my vision to the next level. I’m ready to Journey Forward in my career, and I’m doing it more mindfully: with less stress and more intention. Less thinking I have to do it all alone and more teamwork. Less rushing to the finish line, and more pacing myself for the marathon. There’s no doubt I’ll achieve my vision and dreams. I just want to be at my best self when I get there. And most importantly, I want to be authentic on my journey. I am here role modeling self-care, gratitude and intentional living. I hope those who needed to read this today feel seen and supported. I feel better for that having written it. Cheers to Friday and a peaceful weekend. #slowdown #breathe #justbreathe #peacefulmind #takeyourtime #selfcare #fridayvibes #getoutside #getmoving #stressless #askforhelp #mindfulness #mindfulliving #mindfulnesspractice #awareness #intentionalliving #intentions #getunstuck #journeyforward

For those who need to hear this today, here’s the excerpt from today in my book, A Year of Gratitude: Let Go of the Past Think about something from your past that tends to prevent you from being present, aware, and joyful. Perhaps it’s an old wound or judgment or a retreat you ruminate on. ... Give yourself permission to let go of the past so you can make more room for joy in the present. By practicing awareness and intention, you can take steps towards letting go of what no longer serves you. And as there are no coincidences, I already lit my joy candle this morning when setting my daily intentions. #therearenocoincidences #therearenoaccidents #letgoofthepast #letyourshitgo #awareness #joy #presence #gratitude #getunstuck #journeyforward

I know that we all get stuck; sometimes more than others. One of my favorite questions to ask is: How is staying stuck serving you? Right off the bat, the answer most people give me is, "it's not!"... And yet, upon further inspection, I suspect that there is some secondary benefit you are gaining by staying stuck, even though you don't like it, or it's causing you undo pain or hardship. So I invite you to get curious to investigate further how is staying stuck in the patterns or habits that you wish you could change, serving you? Perhaps it's a perception that it's harder to change than it is to deal with what you don't like. Or maybe because you're afraid; you don't have a working model to know what it looks or feels like to be unstuck...? There are many potential reasons we stay stuck...and then one day, we realize that it's harder to stay stuck than it is to do the work to get unstuck. This is the path to Journey Forward. #getunstuck #journeyforward #wisdomwednesday #wednesdaywisdom #awareness #mindfulness #mindfulliving #awarenesssucks

My guess is that there are things you’ve sworn you’d never do. I’ve had a few of those things... And in fact, so far, I’ve actually done the things I swore I’d never do. ... Why? Because I realized that the narrative I was hearing inside my head want my own. And once I questioned the narrative and was able to tune into my own why I determined that perhaps those decisions were made from a place of not really knowing myself, my values or how I wanted to intentionally be living my life. If this resonates with you, then tune into this week’s podcast episode where I go deeper into how I cultivated this shift, and what it was I swore I’d never do what I just did. We often mistakenly think that change has to be big to be significant to get unstuck and Journey Forward in our lives. The truth is, even a small change, like a 1% shift in how you do something, will grow over time. How might you be more willing, able and open to creating change if you thought that a baby step was enough?... I invite you to consider what 1% shifts you can begin to make, that are in alignment and step you towards the bigger change you are seeking in your life. Here are some examples to get you going... If you want to lose 10+ lbs, don't focus on losing 10, focus on losing just 1 at a time. That feels more attainable, likely stepping you towards greater success. If you are wanting to work on your relationship, don't think about all the changes that need to be made at once for you to be happier - just start with one, perhaps the easiest one, like saying, "thank you" to your partner more often, before you can tackle how to get to the bigger ones. These are simple examples, but are powerful ones in getting our mindset in the right place for us to believe change is possible. If you - or anyone close to you - has ever been through a divorce, you’ll understand when I say that it’s one of the hardest things to go through. It’ll crack you open snd force you to figure out who you are, and what you want your post-divorce life to look like. But before you get to the silver lining (I always think there is a silver lining on the other side, even if it takes a while to get there or believe it’s possible), you gotta do the work. ... Part of that is the emotional work - and that’s what I work with the majority of my clients with; I’d say 60% of my clientele are at the beginning, middle, or end stages of divorce. Especially at the beginning, there’s a ton of fear, both of the unknown and the logistics. I like to work with helping people emotionally manage the unknown. For the logistics, you gotta get a good lawyer; someone who will walk you through each step, leaving no stone unturned for what you need to know. In this week’s podcast episode, I interview Renee Bauer, a divorce lawyer whose practice guides people in how to be happy even after their divorce. This is an informative and yet important conversation on not only the dissolution of a marriage, but in the various ways couples can go about the process. Renee’s straight-forward approach is in part due to her personal experience of being twice divorced, and her wealth of knowledge brings insight, a plan and a strategy to help people forge into the next chapter of their lives. She has created an amazing divorce course that walks you through the steps anyone would need to know to give them confidence and clarity, which is so important during an emotional time. If you’ve been through any stage of divorce, or know someone who has or is currently going through it, you won’t want to miss this episode. Do you ever get stuck doing the same thing and yet get frustrated with having no different outcome? Some say this is the definition of insanity... And yet, we fall into the same patterns of what’s not working, often staying angry, frustrated and overwhelmed, externalizing the blame. We often are unable to look inward to see what we are doing to perpetuate the patterns. ... It takes courage and self-compassion to look inwards and ask, what can I do differently? This poem, Autobiography in 5 Short Chapters, by Portia Nelson, is one of my favorite poems, and is a perfect way to describe how to increase awareness and compassion to get unstuck so you can Journey Forward. I. I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost. I am helpless. It isn't my fault. It takes forever to find a way out. II. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I still don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in the same place. It isn't my fault. It still takes a long time to get out. III. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it there, I still fall in. It's habit. It's my fault. I know where I am. I get out immediately. IV. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. V. I walk down a different street. It was one year ago today that we spent our first Monday on Covid lockdown. I can’t believe a year has gone by!!! I find anniversary dates as fascinating route-markers on our lives, as well as opportunities to reflect on our growth; it's amazing to give ourselves the chance to look back and acknowledge how much more we can handle and get through than we often give ourselves credit for.... However, before I acknowledge our growth and resilience, I want to take a moment to honor the struggle that we've all gone through. This has been a really, really hard year, on so many levels...and I hope that along the way you've been able to honor your struggles with self-compassion, rather than judgment. I am sending out a collective hug and deep compassion to those of you who suffered both illness and loss due to Covid, and I know that would be spiritual bypassing to skip over this very real reality of loss and pain, so I take this moment to honor this pain. And yet, as we come upon this anniversary, along with the increase in vaccination distribution and decrease in overall numbers, there is a lot of anticipation of when life will "go back to normal." It's such an interesting question because I don't think life can go back to "normal" - we have individually and collectively been forever changed as a result of the past year, so it's more accurate to say that we will create a new normal. In this week's podcast episode, I delve deeper into reflection on the past year, where I invite you to consider the gifts you've received as the result of Covid, as well as offer tips for how to have re-entry into our new post-Covid world. This man. This moment. This week. This conversation. This view. I am taking this moment to pause in gratitude. You know, life is far from perfect. In fact, perfect is an unattainable destination that I stopped striving for years ago. ... But was is attainable, is being in alignment. When you’re operating from your own value set, and are unapologetically clear on who you are, then it’s never about perfect, because life and relationships are messy. Though when you’re aligned in who you are, what you want and need, and can accept the wholeness of yourself and others, striving subsides. Acceptance and compassion take over. And contentment and happiness are the result. Because when you’re aligned in your values, you become more patient, resilient, adaptable and forgiving, as well as more open to the possibility of fulfillment. I had this beautiful moment a few months ago with my 17 year old daughter. It was towards the beginning of Covid, and it was a hard day. And I did the authentic thing: I honestly and vulnerably cried in front of my daughter and shared why I was sad. ... It was a true expression of how I was feeling. And the most amazing thing happened: she held me as I cried. And I let her. Then that night she came to me crying about what I knew she was holding in. My authentic expression of feeling my emotions - without judgment or embarrassment - told her that it was 100% okay for her to not to have to hold back what she was feeling. Most parents wouldn’t have done what I did. Most parents would have held back their emotions and tears, and would have pulled themselves together to give the impression that if I keep it all in, then I’m successfully handling what I’m feeling. Here’s the honest truth you guys: holding it in doesn’t mean you’re handling it. Holding it in means you’re denying and resisting feeling what you’re feeling. Holding it in means you’re coming from a place of fear and judgment for being human. Feeling your emotions doesn’t make you weak; in fact, it’s the opposite; it takes great courage to feel what you feel and give it room to exist. Is this resonating with you?? I’d love to hear your mindset of expressing your emotions to your kids (or anyone significant in your life). Compassion is often easier to extend to others than it is to offer to yourself. I find that self-compassion is a practice that many people struggle with as we were not socialized or role-modeled on how to offer ourselves kindness when times are tough; it can be easier to get stuck in judgment, shame, guilt or even pity. - - ; ' .... When you are feeling stuck or overwhelmed, one of my favorite ways to practice self-compassion is to simply say to yourself, "This is really hard right now..." By acknowledging, with a kind of tone of voice (not a judgmental or harsh one), that you are struggling in any way, offers yourself the healing and opportunity to get out of a cycle of judgment or reactivity, and into a cycle of acceptance, kindness and healing. Self-compassion isn't intended to fix the problems at hand, but rather give yourself support along the way. As with many tools, it's easier said than done, but it's super powerful when you practice it. Well, we made it through a crazy hard year, and I know that there is a lot of optimism looking ahead to a fresh start in a new year. If you have set new year's resolutions, or have a long list of goals you'd like to accomplish this year, my suggestion is to be realistic. The majority of people (about 96% people to be exact) generally don't keep their resolutions, and I believe it's because they're biting off more than they can chew (lol, or they want to chew!).... I'm all about creating change, but I am actually into creating change that you'll be able to stick to; not setting yourself up to feel judgment towards yourself for a "failed" resolution. So, to make it stick, keep it small, realistic and attainable. And try starting with just one at a time, and when you master that, try adding another. ...this is what Journey Forward is all about! #setintentions #settinggoals #settingintentions #newyear #newyearsresolution #newyearsresolutions #2021 #realistic #setuourselfupforsuccess #successfulgoals #mindfulness #meditation #journeyforward See more

Here is an excerpt from today’s practices in my new book, A Year of Gratitude. Jan. 4’s reflection is all about acknowledging what you’ve overcome and honoring yourself for having gotten through something you didn’t think you could. Jan. 5’s practice is to savor the small moments...the little things like how it feels to wear your favorite outfit or being wrapped in a cozy blanket, or putting on pajamas out of the dryer. ... It’s easy to overlook the little things, and yet, it’s the little daily acknowledgments of what brings you joy, gratitude and pride that can help shift the way we live through the world. Share below a comment responding to one of the two above practices that resonates with you I’m giving away a copy of the book, over on my Instagram page, so if you want to qualify for that, be sure to comment on the posts on my IG, @joreerose. In this week’s episode, I talk about one of the hardest and yet most powerful practices in mindfulness is the practice of equanimity. (Link in comments below to listen ) This is mental calmness, despite what is arising around you. It is radical acceptance at the deepest level, and when you can come to accept what it is - even if you don’t like what is - things begin to shift; you are no longer stuck in cycles of judgment and reactivity. ... This provides you freedom because you are no longer dependent on external circumstances to determine your mood, your emotions or your present moment experience. Equanimity does not mean you don’t care; in fact, it’s the deepest wisdom to acknowledge that it is what it is. It is the ability to see things as they are, without instantly judging it as good or bad or positive or negative. Equanimity can also serve to regulate our nervous system, helping us to stay calm even in overwhelming situations. Like I always say, it’s so much easier said than done, and that’s why it’s a practice. I encourage you to begin by just noticing your habits or patterns around instant judgment, of the need to make clear sense of what’s in front of you by putting things into clear labels or categories. Equanimity is being okay with the disorganization around you; it’s not judging the messiness or the chaos or the unknown... allow it all to as it is. #equanimity #mindfulness #mentalcalmness #radicalacceptance #acceptance #itiswhatitis #justbe #breathe #allow #accept #motivationmonday #newpodcastalert #newpodcastepisode #podcastersofinstagram #podcastshow #journeyforward See more
