We finally figured out how to explain why you need an estate plan in 4 simple characters... 2020. From Kobe to COVID, Beirut to Australia, murder hornets to whatever else 2020 has to offer us (manslaughter bees?), there are endless examples this year alone that highlight why everyone should have their estate plan in place. If you have a mortgage on your home, do you still need a Living Trust? YES! A common misconception lives on that if you have a mortgage on your home, you don't really "own" it, and as such, don't need a Living Trust as part of your estate plan. This goes towards the belief that estate planning is only for the wealthy or those with complicated assets. This is 100% false, and your home (and family) will end up in Probate court so that a Judge can decide who gets what from your ...estate. In California, Probate is "triggered" by someone passing away with certain assets in their personal name that have a GROSS value of over $166k. Key word being "gross value"! That means, if you own a $500k home but have a $400k mortgage, your gross value is not the $100k in equity that you have, but instead the fair market value of the house - $500k. If that home isn't placed into a Trust and instead is left in your personal name, and something happens to you, Probate will be required. Save your loved ones the headache (*and money), and set up your Trust today!

We had a fun day delivering flowers throughout Mira Mesa today! Our local Trader Joe's donated a huge lot of flowers to the Mira Mesa Senior Center, but the center couldn't take them all, so we got to spread some joy throughout the community! If you ever get a chance to volunteer to do something like this, do it! You just can't beat seeing so many smiles! Thank you to Mahalene Dulay for helping us find happy recipients for the flowers!
