The Lord is in control: He will strengthen His king and exalt His anointed (1 Samuel 2:10). The phrases "his king" and "his anointed" have a double meaning, referring to both David and Christ. This is a clear prediction of both David and the coming Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. This the first time the word "anointed" ( mashiyach or masiyah) refers to an individual's being the Anointed One or the Messiah. The use of Hannah's prayer by Mary, the mother of Jesus, suggests that the very first believers considered this to be a prophecy of the coming Messiah (Luke 1:46-55). From this point on throughout the Old Testament, the Messiah or "Anointed One of God" is often referred to (Psalms 2:6; Psalms 89:20-24; Isaiah 32:1; Jeremiah 23:5; Ezekiel 22, 24; Hosea 3:5; Zechariah 9:9).
