Posted @withregram @cnmamidwives This is your #NationalMidwiferyWeek reminder that the fight for independent practice for nurse-midwives continues! SB 1237 was a HUGE win, and it will officially take effect on January 1, 2021but we still need to ensure that hospitals will give us privileges! It's way time for midwives to be full partners in maternity care in U.S. hospitals. ACNM's National Government Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on Privileging is actively working t...o seek legislative sponsors to introduce a federal bill that will mandate full medical staff privileges for qualified certified nurse-midwives in every hospital that receives Medicare reimbursement. But we need your help to make it happen! Write to your representatives TODAY! Tell them that we're here, we're ready to care for women and families, and we need a guaranteed seat at the table. Ask your family, friends, and other healthcare colleagues to do the same. Let's keep this momentum going! Send a letter of support using the link in our bio! . . . . . #NMW2020 #CNM #Midwives #Midwife #NurseMidwife #Midwifery #Nurse #MaternalHealth #MidwifeLife #StudentNurse #NursingStudent #MidwiferyStudent #FutureMidwife #MaternalJustice #BirthJustice #BirthEquity #Pregnancy #PregnancyCare #Perinatal #LaborAndDelivery #Healthcare #ReproHealth #ReproductiveHealth #YearOfTheNurseandMidwife #SupportNursesAndMidwives #MidwivesRock #BirthWork #BirthWorker #BabyCatcher See more

Early today I posted about Certified Nurse-Midwives. . In the United States there are actually several different types of midwives & several different educational pathways too. Most often resulting in certification & qualifying the candidate for licensing in their residential state. Each state has a different requirement for licensure for each different type of midwife. The most common types of midwives are Certified Professional Midwives (CPM), Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM...), & Certified Midwives (CM). CNMs are trained in both nursing & midwifery. The vast majority of CNMs train & ultimately practice in clinics & hospitals. Although their training & practice can also occur in community (homes and birth centers) settings also. Certified Midwives are individuals who have graduated from masters level midwifery education program. They have similar training to CNMs, conform to the same standards as CNMs, but are not required to have the nursing component. Certified Professional Midwives education and clinical training focuses on providing midwifery model care, obstetrics and gynecology, in homes and freestanding birth centers. They are experts in community birth. As you can see there are several different types of midwife and it can be a bit confusing! Did you have a midwife for your birth? What type of midwife did you have and what setting was your birth in? Tell us your story! . #midwiferyweek2020 #midwiferyweek #midwifery #cnm #cm #cpm #moms #babies #gynocology #obstetrics #families #evidencebasedcare #NMW2020 #midwifeforall #primarycare

What is Certified Nurse-Midwife? Midwifery encompasses a full range of primary health care services for women from adolescence to beyond menopause. These services include primary care, gynecologic & family planning services, preconception care, care during pregnancy, childbirth & the postpartum period, care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life, & treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infections. Midwives provide initial & ongoing comprehensive ...assessment, diagnosis & treatment. They conduct physical examinations; prescribe medications including controlled substances & contraceptive methods; admit, manage & discharge patients; order & interpret laboratory & diagnostic tests & order the use of medical devices. Midwifery care also includes health promotion, disease prevention, & individualized wellness education & counseling. These services are provided in partnership with women & families in diverse settings such as ambulatory care clinics, private offices, community & public health systems, homes, hospitals & birth centers. CNMs are educated in two disciplines: midwifery & nursing. They earn graduate degrees, complete a midwifery education program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME), & pass a national certification examination administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) to receive the professional designation of CNM. CNMs must demonstrate that they meet the Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) upon completion of their midwifery education programs & must practice in accordance with ACNM Standards for the Practice of Midwifery. ACNM competencies & standards are consistent with or exceed the global competencies & standards for the practice of midwifery as defined by the International Confederation of Midwives. To maintain the designation of CNM, midwives must be recertified every 5 years through AMCB and must meet specific continuing education requirements. #midwiferyweek2020 #midwiferyweek #midwifery #cnm #gynecology #primarycare #obsetrics #moms #babies #families #evidencebasedcare

Truth!!! This is not just about medicated or unmedicated birth! This is about knowing that things can change in birth. It might be locations, pain management, your support person, your birth team or maybe the type of birth (vaginal vs Caesarean section). Of course in an ideal world everything will go as planned but sometimes things outside of our control happen. Think about those things and have a plan b or c or d! . .
