Since becoming a mom so much has changed, having a baby was hard enough.... I couldn’t imagine losing her. Jeremy has a sad story to tell. After two years of waiting for a match, the boy’s condition has deteriorated to the point that he needs a transplant whether he finds a match or not, his family said. Jeremy was born with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), a genetic disorder that results in an impaired immune system. Doctors say he could catch a deadly infection at... any point. Jeremy also tested positive for diamond blackfan anemia, a rare congenital disease that affects bone marrow, making it difficult for the body to produce red blood cells. The boy has already received 15 blood transfusions, which have caused toxic build-up of iron in his blood. His family believes the reason that he does not have a match is because his ancestry includes Native American blood. The best chance for a donor match is a sibling. But in Jeremy’s case, neither of his two siblings is a match. He also struck out in finding a match on the registry. Persons who are able to do so, and especially those with both Northern European and Native American ancestry, are asked to join the donor registry in Jeremy’s virtual drive at join.bethematch.org/swabforjeremy The majority of the time, people can donate stem cells through a process similar to giving blood, which does not require general anesthesia and is virtually free of risk for serious complications.
