JESD recognizes February as African American History Month. We’re celebrating African American leaders who made groundbreaking contributions to American society. Today, let’s learn about Lewis Howard Latimer. Lewis Howard Latimer (1848-1928) was the inventor of light bulbs with carbon filament, eliminating the fire hazards in earlier bulb models and paving the way for filament and fluorescent lamps. Latimer, the son of formerly enslaved people, began work in a patent law ...firm after serving in the military for the Union during the Civil War. He was recognized for his talent drafting patents and was promoted to head draftsman, where he also co-invented an improved bathroom designs for railroad trains. He also drafted the drawings that Alexander Graham Bell used to patent the first telephone in 1876. Learn more about Lewis Howard Latimer in this short video from the Lewis H. Latimer House in New York: https://youtu.be/aFSfm_7ty8Q #AfricanAmericanHistoryMonth #JESDcares

Dear JESD Community, As we witness the aftermath of events that unfolded in Washington, D.C. yesterday, we would like to remind our community that we are committed to providing all students with a safe and nurturing environment where each student demonstrates a spirit of respect, responsibility and a commitment to academic and civic excellence. Regardless of beliefs or affiliations, we encourage our community members to support our efforts for a safe and nurturing environme...nt by supporting each other with respect and civility. We are experiencing a very challenging period of time. It undoubtedly has brought increased stress to our homes and families. It is important that we have conversations with our children about how to understand and process current events. COVID-19 can spread anywhere, even in places where you feel safe, such as your home. If even one person in your household contracts COVID-19, it can easily spread to others in your home. Please take the time to analyze your contact bubble. While there is no official definition for a contact bubble, the CDC defines close contact as coming within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before ill...ness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated. We experience close contact with those who live in our household. Analyze your contact bubble to determine the risk of COVID-19 around you. At this time, we would like to provide our JESD community with an update on the "Return to In-Person Instruction." At Jefferson Elementary School District, we take our responsibility to safeguard your and our community’s health seriously. Our School Board voted at its October 14th meeting to continue in Distance Learning until at least January 19, 2021 IF the following health conditions are met: ... 1) Both San Francisco and San Mateo Counties are placed in the "Yellow" or "Minimal" tier of Reopening on California's Blueprint for a Safer Economy (https://covid19.ca.gov/safer-economy/) 2) New, weekly cases in Daly City are fewer than 30 for two weeks. Currently, San Mateo County is in the Red Tier of Reopening indicating widespread presence of the virus. While it may be possible to return to In Person Instruction under this tier, our District Board voted to hold off until health conditions present a safer environment to return to instruction on our school sites. Our District and community still have much work to do to establish the conditions and prepare our facilities for a safe return. We will continue to monitor local health data to determine improved health conditions, and will continue our work to implement necessary safety precautions. As always, please know that our District will notify our community of a Return Date at least 2 weeks before the return date with more details on how we will return. After November 10, you will be able to view progress toward the health conditions from our District website. Thank you for your collaboration and partnership during this difficult time. Let’s focus our efforts on ensuring our students are attending and participating in their on-line classes. Let’s continue to practice safety by wearing our facial coverings, maintaining our physical distance from others not in our households and washing or sanitizing our hands regularly. #JESDcares
