Hallelujah!! A shred of good news! " An experimental investigation conducted at Kansas State University’s Biosecurity Research Institute found that SARS-CoV-2 is unable to replicate in three common types of mosquitoes, making it impossible for them to transmit the virus to humans. Researchers discovered that the novel coronavirus failed to reproduce within the Aedes aegypti, Ae. Albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus species of mosquitoes, even when mosquitoes fed on people with the virus in their blood. This is excellent news as mosquito-born diseases kill millions of people each year across the globe." I still hate to get bit though. . Dr. Lipton

Seems like the symptoms involved with this virus are never ending! Here's another one to be on the lookout for: "Rash Inside Mouth May Be Symptom Of COVID-19, Small Study Suggests Newsweek (7/20, Gander) reports, A rash inside the mouth could be a symptom of COVID-19, according to a small study. After examining the mouths of 21 COVID-19 patients who had rashes on their skin to see if they had enanthem, or a rash inside the body on the mucous membrane, researchers discove...red six (29 percent) of the patients had some form of enanthem in their mouths. Furthermore, the findings indicate that on average, it took around 12 days for the patients to develop a rash on their mucous membrane after they showed known COVID-19 symptoms, and most of the six patients (83 percent) had petechiae, or small purple, red, or brown spots in their oral cavities. The findings were published in JAMA Dermatology. This picture is not from a covid patient. . . just an example of oral petechaie. Stay safe and healthy! Dr. Lipton See more

Here's some good news for those of us who are still OK with fluoride! "Community water fluoridation is not linked with an increased risk of osteosarcoma, according to a study published in the Journal of Dental Research. The findings refute a 1990 animal study that suggests fluoride ingestion as a possible risk factor for this type of cancer." This is a picture of fluoride in its mineral form. . .

From Fast Company magazine: "The study, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, identifies the businesses that have the best overall risk-benefit profiles when weighing important factors such as essential value to shoppers and the economy, as well as relative risk of contracting COVID-19or as one researcher put it, which businesses give us the most bang for our buck. At the top of the pile are banks, which are economically important yet uncrowded and visit...ed infrequently and for short periods of time." DO IT (Probably worth the risk) Banks Dentists Colleges and universities Hurrah!! My profession is worth it :) We are working hard to make it safe and "worth it". Hope you all are surviving the shelter in place. Remember to stay with your oral hygiene routines!

Hmmm. . . flea market dentistry. At least it didn't say she was too surprised at the result! Have a great weekend and go Niners! JL January 30, 2020 -- A dental grill purchased at a flea market in Texas caused severe tooth decay and rot for a woman who wore the decorative cover cemented on her front teeth for a year, according to a news report published January 24 by KZTV 10. The woman, who was not identified, said wearing the grill has led her to spend a significant amou...nt of money to fix her teeth, which essentially disintegrated. The woman claims she bought the grill at a flea market in Corpus Christi and paid about $1,000 to have it cemented on her front teeth. She had the dental cover affixed to her teeth, assuming it was made of gold. Unfortunately, it was made of a nonprecious metal, a material that can cause many to have allergic reactions. After wearing the decorative tooth cover for about a year, she noticed a bad odor coming from her mouth. She brushed, flossed, and used mouthwash, but nothing got rid of the smell. She made a dental appointment, and that's when she learned that food that became trapped behind the grill led to a buildup of bacteria. The dentist told her that the bacteria produced acid, which decayed her teeth and gums. When her dentist removed the grill, no teeth were visible. The dentist had to pull the pieces of the woman's remaining teeth and insert a bridge to replace the missing teeth. It is unclear whether the person who cemented the grill to her teeth was a licensed professional and performed it in a sterile environment.

This is what we do here. . . try to save teeth from having crowns by treating teeth with large composite restorations. Yes, it may need a crown in the future, but save as much tooth structure as possible for as long as possible is my philosophy. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2020! Dr. Lipton
