It might seem like a harmless gesture putting out a bit of food for one of the deer living nearby, but CDFW Capt. Patrick Foy offers a number of reasons (for one, it’s illegal) NOT to feed deer. Please watch.

We’re very pleased to be sharing video of tiny native rainbow trout in Ventura County, because this group beat unlikely odds and survived the Thomas Fire of 201...7. Ninety percent of the fish in this part of the Ventura River watershed didn’t make it because of the fire-caused debris flows (recent aerial footage of the area shows damage). But about 300 newly hatched native trout were spotted during a recent survey giving CDFW biologists the hope these fish are going to be okay. See more

The lake has iced out. There may be some ice in shady coves. There is some patchy snow on the ground. Drove down Honker Cove this afternoon, as far as the restrooms. Drove the truck in; in 2wd. Pretty rough through the icy area. Did not drive down the ramp, it looked pretty dicey. Do not have an update on the West Side yet. Fish are being caught; both bait fishing and fly; off of Grizzly Campground, Coot Bay and Mallard Cove.

Ice Report. Yes the lake is frozen. As of today there is no open water left at Mallard. Ice is reported to be from 6 to 8 inches from Mallard down to the dam. It was noisy today with some cracks forming. This mornings temp was 16 degrees when I opened, and the high was 35 degrees. Cory reported that it was smooth enough to skate on, since all of the snow has melted off the ice. Fish were hitting, a nice stringer of fish came out of Catfish Cove. Remember the ice is not officially monitored and the information above is as reported by fishermen. It is up to you to decide if it is safe or not for you to go out on.

I do believe winter is here. The lake is frozen. Had snow flurries yesterday morning, started snowing around 3. This morning we have nearly 5 inches, had more but it took awhile for it to start sticking. Currently snowing.

Drove up to Mallard Cove. As of 12/21 there is a small amount of open water. The lake is icing up, looks thin. Road into Mallard was a bit icy and rough but doa...ble. Also, drove down Coot Bay, very rough and icy. No open water at Coot. Be careful if driving down Honker Cove, A car got themselves stuck on Saturday and had to dig out. Need high clearance. Dam area has large area of ice. Folks have been fishing; Saturday a nice brown was caught. Remember the ice is not officially monitored. It is up to you to decide if it is safe or not.

Christmas Star"? It's not a star at all, but the conjunction of the planets Saturn and Jupiter. Look toward the southwest horizon just after sunset on Dec 21. The two planets will appear to be one! This is the closest the two planets have passed each other in the sky in 400 years and nearly 800 years since this occurred at night!

Just over 4 new inches on the ground and currently snowing. Expecting an inch or less today. Already melting. Last night around 9 started raining until after... 11pm. Interestingly, the temp rose to 41 degrees. Started snowing sometime early morning. Wet and a bit slushy, temp at 7 am is 35 degrees, so we the snow is slowly melting. See more
