With extremely heavy hearts we share the tragic news that dive master Katrina Martens Hurricane died from injuries suffered in a car crash late Friday night December 12th. Katrina was a beloved member of our dive community, and a spirited, determined individual. Our entire dive family deeply mourns her passing. We will remember her as an avid diver, a scientist, our resident fish expert, a colleague, and friend. Katrina brought energy and enthusiasm to her dive work,... and joy to those who knew her. Information regarding a celebration of life service will follow soon.

Hey Everyone, If you are looking to dive this weekend, join us at Lover's Point at 9a m on Saturday the 1st. Conditions might be less than ideal, but we will find a good spot to dive (maybe copper roof house or butterfly house). If all else fails, there is always Shark Days at the aquarium! Hope to see you there!... -DM Hurricane

Some of you have been asking me for updates on the sea star wasting syndrome (SSWS). It seems that it is still ravaging the sea star population, but you can help by submitting your sitings. Check out this webpage from UC Santa Cruz to find out how you can help. -DM Hurricane

I posted this about a month ago, but while I was working by the Point Reyes Seashore, I had a (rare) chance to hang out at a beach for a couple hours and saw sooo many velella on the beach and one of these pelagic barnacles. The barnacle was actually still alive! My boss got some photos so maybe I will post them here soon. It was absolutely incredible holding the barnacle in my hand, possibly even more incredible than holding a seahorse. Please re-enjoy this blog from the Bodega Head caretaker, Jackie (I know I will since I actually saw these creatures). -DM Hurricane

Once again I am sad to report that I haven't had time to write up a blog for all of you. Please check out this really cool blog on Extreme Fishes put up by The Fisheries Blog. You should check out some of their other blog topics; I found some of them pretty fascinating. Enjoy!

Hey Everyone, Sorry for my silence on the page, I still haven't had time to write a blog. In the meantime, enjoy this blog from the caretaker at the Bodega Marine Lab (Jackie). She has a blog devoted to the natural history around Bodega Bay. This entry focuses on a floating barnacle (say what?). -DM Hurricane

"With every breath you take, with every drop you drink, you are connected to the sea no matter where on earth you live." -Sylvia Earle I am going to be out of state for the next couple of weeks and probably won't be able to post any blogs. Please enjoy this TED talk by Sylvia Earle in my absence. I really enjoyed it and hope you do too. You can also check out her new movie on Netflix called "Mission Blue." I haven't seen it yet so I can't attest to its enjoyability, but I am sure it isn't bad. -DM Hurricane

PSA: The outdoor shower at San Carlos Beach is now fixed. The big question now is how long will it remain operational...
