Full of drive that’s the best way to describe Irvine Valley College (IVC) student Wilfredo Perez. The 22-year-old Perez chases after his goals with enthusiasm and a laser focus. It’s that kind of effort that went into researching his community college options. He wanted a college where he could take courses that meet the general educational requirements for a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). This is a well-deserved honor for Lexi, says IVC President John C. Hernandez. She is one of the most actively engaged students at IVC and in the community as a member of the Collegiate Student Advisory Council for the City of Irvine. Standing out in the world of higher education can be challenging. Thousands of schools exist across the county, creating higher levels of competition than ever before. Irvine Valley College, however, has been recognized by The Hispanic Outlook on Education (HO) Magazine as one of the top 100 schools for Hispanics in the United States and is being highlighted in the October issue of HO magazine. https://www.hispanicoutlook.com/educatio/october-2020-issue

Reason #3 to give to Irvine Valley College is because here our hearts found shelter, here we came alive! IVC has a lot of excellent programs taught by renowned professors such as our chorale program under the direction of Matthew Tresler. Besides producing this incredible virtual choir video, the IVC chorale also took 55 members (singers, friends, families, and college supporters) to the Mozart Choral Festival, in Salzburg back in the summer of 2018. Many of these types o...f opportunities would not have been possible for students without the support of the Foundations and their donors. The Silver and the Blue Where the Western foothills Shimmer in the light. Here our hopes awakened, Here our dreams took flight. Where the last long sunray Paints the hills and sky, Here our hearts found shelter, Here we came alive! We’ll be called to industry, Called to science and the arts. Friends at Irvine Valley Always in our hearts. Irvine Valley, alma mater, Voices rise to you. We will long remember The Silver and the Blue! Irvine Valley College Alma Mater: The Silver and the Blue Composed by Bradley Ellingboe (2010), text by Elaine Rubenstein (2009). Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony arrangements by Dale Leaman (2011). Join us tomorrow, October 22, as we celebrate IVC’s Giving Day! Reason #2 to give to Irvine Valley College is because of supportive programs like Summer Bridge Program and EOPS that help students become successful at IVC and beyond! IVC's Summer Bridge program has helped prepare students for college. They give students opportunities to participate in cultural enrichment events and activities that promote student success. This program helps incoming students with college survival skills, persuasive speaking, communication skills, research,... effective listening, study skills, goal-setting, and time management. For more information about this program go to students.ivc.edu/counselingcenter The Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (along with Guardian Scholars, CARE, and CalWORKs) is a state-funded program for students who are financially and educationally disadvantaged. At IVC, EOPS works to help students succeed by providing educational opportunities, encouragement, and support services. Reaching educational goals may seem difficult sometimes. The IVC EOPS staff are committed to assisting our students in realizing their potential. Join us this Thursday, October 22, as we celebrate IVC’s Giving Day! Reason #1 to give to Irvine Valley College is because of success stories like that of IVC alumnus AJ Merton. Alexander "AJ" Merton is a white-collar and tax controversy trial attorney at the largest litigation-only law firm in the world, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP. Prior to joining Quinn Emanuel, AJ was a trial attorney for the United States Department of Justice, Tax Division, where he began through the Attorney General's Honors Program, and is a two-time recipien...t of the US DOJ Tax Division's Outstanding Attorney Award. AJ earned his law degree at the University of Southern California and earned his undergraduate degree from Loyola Marymount University, which he attended on a debate scholarship that was offered to him while competing on the IVC Speech & Debate Team. According to AJ, "IVC, and specifically IVC forensics, provided me one of the most meaningful platforms to earn opportunities for professional advancement and personal growth." He added, "above all other things, the IVC Speech & Debate Team imbued my teammates and me with an obligation to be respectful, dependable, ambitious, competitive, smart, creative, and generally nurtured a culture of winning that has carried through throughout my life." AJ credits IVC and forensics for providing him critical skills and opportunities that have led to many of his current blessings, and thus, AJ embraces his obligations to give back to the forensics community and to IVC. Before attending law school, AJ taught 7th through 12th grade argumentation and debate at The Harker School in San Jose, California, and currently serves the IVC Foundation as a member of its Board of Governors.
