Yesterday, 10/19/20, one of our motor officers was working speed enforcement on Jamboree Road and Warner Avenue. This area has been home to several major traffic collisions. The posted speed limit is 60 MPH, yet vehicles often drive faster than that. Our officer observed a white Lamborghini Huracan Performante passing numerous vehicles while traveling at 103 MPH on Jamboree Road during busy day time traffic. The driver’s actions were dangerous to those traveling nearby. The driver was stopped and was arrested for CVC 23103 (a) Reckless Driving. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Just because your vehicle can go zero to 120 MPH in less than 7.7 seconds, doesn't mean it should! Stay safe Irvine drivers and follow the posted speed limits. #IPDTraffic #drivesafely #slowdown #inpartnershipwiththecommunity

Over the weekend, the Irvine Police Department again worked in partnership with several other Orange County agencies to target illegal street racing and interse...ction takeovers in Orange County. During Saturday night’s operation, officers witnessed cars racing on Main Street in the City of Irvine. Officers stopped one of the vehicles and the driver admitted to being involved in street racing. The driver was unlicensed and was in possession of narcotics. He was arrested for these violations and his car was impounded for 30 days. Illegal street racing is dangerous to community members and spectators. IPD will continue these operations as part of our overall traffic safety strategy. To report information about street racing or takeovers, please call the Irvine Police Department at (949) 724-7000. #Irvine #InPartnershipWithTheCommunity Irvine PD Traffic Bureau #StreetRacing #Takeovers

Over the past two months, the Irvine Police Department has been working in partnership with several other Orange County agencies to target illegal street racing... and intersection takeovers. We will be continuing our enforcement efforts this weekend. Illegal street racing activities are inherently dangerous to innocent community members and spectators alike. In addition, these illegal activities cause extensive damage to roadways, costing thousands of dollars in repairs. To report information about street racing or takeovers, please call the Irvine Police Department at (949) 724-7000. #Irvine #InPartnershipWithTheCommunity #IPDTrafficBureau #StreetRacing #Takeovers

Can you use a cell phone while stopped at a red light? The answer is "No". California Vehicle Code 23123.5 (a) states, "A person shall not drive a motor vehicle while holding and operating a handheld wireless telephone [...] unless the wireless telephone [...] is specifically designed and configured to allow voice-operated and hands-free operation, and it is used in that manner while driving."... You are considered "driving" even while stopped at a red light. Additionally, using a cell phone isn't limited to just texting or making a phone call. Any non-hands-free use of a cell phone while driving is a violation and could result in a citation.
