It’s affected me mentally because I’ve got autism, he said. And I tend to be wound up. I would daydream a lot. With running, I’ve drained energy and can focus more. And I’ve become more sociable. His mother’s happiest moment came when the team huddled after a race, arms around each other, and Austin was in the middle of it all. Sensory issues faded away when he is on this team.
For people with special needs, Pathfinders for Autism (PFA), a Maryland-based autism resource center, has created guidelines for how to interact with police. PFA trains individuals with developmental disabilities to show their hands to police officers, not touch a police officer, not run away and disclose their condition to the officer.
Wishing everyone a Safe and Happy Halloween!!!
Tino, a resident of Havertown, has autism and although he was able to recite memorized lines from videos that he had watched, he was unable to communicate his most basic wants and needs. Three years ago, a Spelling To Communicate workshop completely changed the lives of Gregory and his parents, Gregory and Linda Tino, as well as the rest of his family. Now, at age 27, he not only possesses the means to communicate, but Tino has also self-published a book to help educate the world about autism.
So then, the children on the spectrum that I work with will do a new idea, and it will make the person laugh. And, they’ll be like, ‘Whoa, that is huge. I just went in their perspective, and it made more of an effect.’ And it’s super exciting for people on the spectrum. Watkins partnered with Ali Arena and therapist Nicole Moore to develop the Improv Method, a continuing-education course on the incorporation of improv comedy games into various therapeutic strategies.
His participation in class improved, Tiffany said. The team is great for him. It gives him social, which is a struggle for a lot of people with autism. There were more social activities. There were more just conversations. It’s a great team. They really have embraced Austin. I can’t say enough good things about all of them.
"Lucas came home that night and he said mom, I have to build a playground, "recalled Jennifer. Instead of rolling her eyes, Lucas' mom rolled the dice and contacted Natalie Mackay. "And before anyone knew it, "says Mackay, "I was standing beside Lucas, explaining to city council what an inclusive playground was"
Like many adult women, my diagnosis came through the diagnosis of my child. It’s an increasingly common story. My daughter had behavioral differences and sensory sensitivities from quite a young age and she was diagnosed with autism at age seven. A year ago, I set up Autism Camp Australia, a charity for autistic children and their families. I was studying autism every day, constantly talking to parents, and it became very clear I had many of the symptoms myself. Even before I had my diagnosis confirmed by a specialist, I knew I had found the answer.
People on the spectrum have some of the highest unemployment rates, but they’re qualified and smart enough to have good high paying jobs. That’s why Ford has worked to hire more people with autism over the last few years -- and it’s proving to be highly successful. In 2016, Ford partnered with the Autism Alliance of Michigan to introduce the the Ford Works Program. The program focuses on hiring individuals -- like Ford IT business analyst Nick Howard -- who are on the autism spectrum.
As the mother of a severely autistic child (her oldest son, Charlie, who is seven) who is on the autism spectrum herself, Eileen has a unique, multifaceted perspective on the issues affecting the autism community. On her blog (The Autism Cafe), Eileen never shies away from the toughest topics facing the autism community and the sometimes difficult reality of balancing Charlie’s needs with those of his brother, five-year-old Jude. "I always get a lot of letters from people with autism who relate to Luna a lot," Lynch said. "Obviously, I don't fully understand the condition, but, I understand this feeling of you just can't communicate with those around you and it gets misunderstood, and you just want people to see your heart, to see how you feel, but it's hard to communicate that." https://buff.ly/2HeR2OW
A new study showing a much needed rise in awareness for girls on the spectrum! Girls with autism are not being diagnosed because they are adept at camouflaging their behavior in an effort to try to fit in, according to a new study. Autism is diagnosed in 1% of the population and a diagnosis is made more often and earlier in boys, with a reported ratio of four males to every female, according to the paper published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.
