Day 5 of Fall Prevention Awareness Week! The staggered stance is great for so many exercises. Raising that back heel may not seem like much but it can really be a progression. ... Notice all you see are Karen's feet for a bit & you can see from her leg muscles & feet that she is working. Her stabilizing muscles are firing. Up top all she needs is a #fitnessball pushing it out to 3 points. When moving is too much all I have someone do is stay in the stance & breathe. #fallpreventionawarenessweek #balancetraining #ageaintnothingbutanumber See more
Day 4 of Fall Prevention Awareness Week! Agility defined by American Council on Exercise - ACE is: the ability to change direction quickly with ease. Is there any age limit for agility?? NO. ... Thanks to a trainer Martha worked with before me shes the ladder. I am not kidding...if it is on the floor she will be doing some kind of fancy footwork on it without me saying a word. That coordination and confidence mean that she has the balance and body awareness to put her feet & move her body where it needs to go. #disruptaging #fallpreventionawarenessweek #laddertraining See more
3 Me Day 3 of Fall Prevention Awareness Week! Borrowing a great movement from Dr. Evan Osar of @iihfe...This is waaaay more than balance so there are some prerequisites before I would introduce this. I tell clients that there is an egg under their moving foot...so essentially they are on one leg. It's a subtle but very effective movement that hits balance, practices hip hinging, alignment & other things (it will also light up those glutes). Like many movements that chal...lenge & improve balance...going slower, proper breathing & moving with intention is key. #fallpreventionawarenessweek #speedhidescontrol #movewithpurpose See more
Day 2 Fall Prevention Awareness Week! Picking things up off the floor & reaching for them can be easy...but for some reaching away from their body can be scary because of balance issues. However it does not need to be!... It is subtle but the heel is raised on one foot as Ruth reaches. It's a good variation to having her balancing just on one leg. Bonus*** is that she hip hinges as well . There are always options to a movement even with knee issues like she has. #balancetraining #redefineaging #fallpreventionawarenessweek
It is Fall Prevention Awareness Week! Everyday this week I’ll share ways to reduce the chances of avoidable falls... ... Here Karen is doing a half-kneeling to balance movement. I challenge people half her age to do it with control. It can be broken up in steps or put together as she does. There are many variations... #balancetraining #fallpreventionawarenessweek #nevertooold See more
In the U.S. mobility is the most common disability among older adults... Yes. When it comes to difficulty in movement to do necessary everyday movements, our age should generally not dictate that. Why did I post a picture of me as a kid? Because this is a reminder that when we are younger we take squatting to look at something for granted...but just because we are a certain age does not mean we can't/should not be able to explore our world and do what we need & want to do in life. Aside from that I do wish there were more Velcro shoes for adults... :)
Nothing at all to do with fitness...just something to put a smile on your face....
Two abstracts from studies to share...Especially check out the parts I circled. It is imperative older adults find ways to move better. Even with gyms being closed in parts of the country active agers still have lives to live. The fitness community is improving but has a ways to go to be better about introducing creative ways to get more active aging individuals distancing themselves from ageist views of "getting old" means.
Can you spot the most optimal head position here? In one video Ruth is looking down vs a more neutral head position. I said nothing to her about changing her posture...All I did was have her change how she held the ball. Generally...our most optimal posture should be kept during exercise. Head down posture can mean a tight neck, not the best breathing & rounded shoulders. Sometimes just changing how we hold an external weight can bring us into the most optimal posture we should have in every day life.
Last year I was fortunate to be one of the subject matter experts in American Council on Exercise - ACE huge project revamping their Personal Trainer Study Program. Their program is now live! I learned so much in the process of creating and editing my scripts, bringing the content to life with my own take on fitness and shooting the videos. I am very grateful for the opportunity. Thanks ACE! #acecertifiedpersonaltrainer #olderadultfitness #redefineaging

A few months ago I received some great advice to include the children (like my age ) in the discussion about the importance of better movement for the active aging demographic. With that in mind check out the link below for a blog post geared to inform those of active aging parents or other loved ones....of the importance of balance training. This is not the first such article of this nature...expect many more! https://incrementalfit.com//why-balance-training-is-impor/
Okay. I am putting my heart on the page. All of the ugliness has really been hitting me hard. I have been a ghost on social media and trying to find constructive ways to come to terms with the state of affairs. If you would like to read my thoughts feel free to click the link to go to my Medium.com platform. These are my words I don’t attempt to speak for every person in the black community. Take a seat, it’s not a short read. #crossfit #racism #georgefloyd #breonnataylor #strongertogether #adreamdeferred #imtiredofthisshit https://medium.com//crossfit-ceos-comment-racism-a9e2814fe
