Boundaries can change day-to-day, person-to-person. And they change based on what makes you feel safe and comfortable IN THAT MOMENT!

I wanted (and still want) my niece and nephew to have the best possible start in life.I knew that Mom and Dad were taking care if the essentials for physical/mental/spiritual/emotional good health and I wanted to give them the gift of safety so they would always know that they have the tools to judge their situations accurately and keep themselves safe.

I had a teenage student tell me that she would feel uncomfortable enforcing her boundaries with someone older than her because, He’s going to say who are you t...o tell me what to do? Who is she to tell them what to do? She’s the owner of her body, she makes the decisions PERIOD and that is enough! I told her that she is the only person who has full authority of her body, her space and her safety. She has EVERY RIGHT to speak up for what she needs and that person she’s confronting about violating her boundaries should listen without hesitation regardless of their age, status, job title, relationship, etc. Bodily autonomy is imperative. We need to teach our kids at an early age that they alone own their bodies and that they have the final say in who touches them or gets in their space. As teens and adults, it will make setting boundaries easier because we’ll be used to speaking up for what makes us uncomfortable instead of thinking that we have to let someone have access to us. . . . October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, help is available. Because of the IMPACT Kids Class, I felt safe and secure with who I was as a person, and I knew how to stand up for myself. Now, as an instructor almost 19 years later, I help kids learn how to stand up to bullies, both for themselves and others, as well as set strong boundaries with people they don’t know. I cannot recommend this class enough because it helped shape me into the strong adult I am today. -Danielle Joy, IMPACT Lead Instructor

Gavin de Becker is spot on with this commentary about our society. We teach people to stay firm with their boundaries, and they don’t have to justify their no if they don’t want to.
