Recent research by FH Board Member Deb Richey uncovered that the American Legion Patriotic Hall, now the Fullerton Recreation Center in Hillcrest Park, had an architect. The assumption had always been that building contractors Carey & Potter had designed the building. The building was actually designed in 1932 by architect Marcus (Marc) Soderberg (1883-1968), a Norwegian immigrant. He was an immigrant success story, moving from bricklayer to draftsman to architect/engineer.

The Local History Room at FPL has acquired a copy of Adam Arenson's Banking on Beauty: Millard Sheets and Midcentury Commercial Architecture in California. The book concentrates on the buildings and murals that Millard Sheets designed for Home Savings and Loan starting in 1953. Orange County Preserve, along with Tony Sheets, the son of Millard Sheets, have saved the Santa Monica mural by having it moved to the Hilbert Museum of California Art in Orange. Open free to the public, the museum is located near the train station on Atchison, opposite Ruby's Diner.

FUN FACT on Vans Shoes: On March 16, 1966, Paul Van Doren opened a 400 square foot retail store in Anaheim at 704 E Broadway to sell a line of sneakers that he ...produced in a small factory behind the store. The original price on the shoes was $2.29 for women and $4.49 for men. The Van Doren Rubber Company went on to become famous as a manufacturer of Vans, a line of shoes that continues to be popular among skateboarders and BMX cyclists. While I worked at the old Martenet Hardware at 323 W. Lincoln between 1966-1972, I waited on Paul Van Doren and his brother, James, regularly as customers. In 1972, my wife Susan and I moved to 308 S Kroeger Street which was one block from the Vans factory on Atchison Street. At night, they baked the rubber soles and the smell of vulcanizing rubber permeated the neighborhood!
