Impermanence by Alicia A. Clark Soap 3x1x1-1/2 ART-129, Two-Dimensional Design, instructor Stephanie Bedwell... #2020remotestudentshowcase Our assignment was to create an abstract sculpture using a bar of soapMy thoughts on my remote learning experience are that it has afforded me more time to work on my projects, by not having to make the daily commute to campus. I have saved time and gas. However, I have also missed the interaction with my classmates. I miss the personal connection that you get from sitting in the classroom. As for my art practice, I am certain that I am missing a lot, by not having immediate access to my professors, as well as not being able to ask questions in real time, as I am creating my art pieces. Distance learning has its pluses and minuses. I think the minuses outweigh the pluses in this scenario. The Brothers Noah Depart with their Animals By David Gilhooly Ceramic vessel, 1972 11.5x13x15.5" #hydegallerycollection... David Gilhooly (1943-2013) once stated that his lowbrow humor makes his work accessible so thateven my most maiden old aunt or my most drugged-out cousin can get at the meaning of the work or at least experience it! He studied at the University of California, where he worked as an assistant to sculptor Robert Arneson. Gilhooly was aleading advocate of the funk art movement, which challenged the seriousness of the art world by focusing on absurd images of everyday objects. He parodied ancient civilizations, religion, politics, and culture by creating an alternative reality he dubbed FrogWorld, where all figurative elements were replaced with ceramic frogs and other creatures. His pointed examination of social and political realities resulted in characters such as Frog Queen Victoria, Frog Osiris, and Boris Frogloff, all depicted in stately busts. The artist began presenting his frog sculptures in bathtub scenes. The bathtubs contained the piece and lifted them in a more presentational manner. Some of these pieces were meant to be installed in a hole in the floor, the idea being that the artwork extended under the house and the visible piece was just the tip of the iceberg. Gilhooly then transitioned from bathtubs to boats or arks. This was an easy transition as arks are just inverted bathtubs, one holds water and the other is held by waterI started making arks mainly because I liked piles of colorful things and mass quantities of stuff contained in something. The ark seemed like the perfect place. Works from the gallery’s permanent art collection will continue to be featured as part of #hydeartgallery’s temporary remote programming. #davidgilhooly #brothersnoah #frogworld #funkart #fuckceramics #clay #ceramics #lowbrow #borisfrogloff #ark #artcollection #remotelearning #remoteexhibit #remoteart #grossmontcollege @grossmontedu @grossmontoutreach #elcajon #sandiego See more

Leaf from the Belle Heures From the Limbourg Brothers Illuminated manuscript, c. 1405-1409 5x7 #hydegallerycollection... Created between 1405 and 1409, probably in Paris, The Belles Heures, or Beautiful Hours, a private devotional book, is one of the most sumptuous manuscripts to have come down to us from the Middle Ages. Commissioned by the French prince John, Duke of Berry from the Limbourg brothers, the most gifted artists of their time, it is the only manuscript completed by them in its entirety. The richly illustrated text is enhanced by seven unprecedented picture cycles devoted to Christian figures or events that held special significance for the duke. Using a luminous palette, the artists blended an intimate Northern vision of nature with Italianate modes of figural articulation. The keen interest in the natural world and the naturalistic means of representing it, so striking in the 172 illuminations, foreshadow the work of Jan van Eyck and the ensuing generations of outstanding 15th-century painters in the South Netherlands. -Metmuseum.org Illuminated manuscripts were hand-made books, usually on Christian scripture or practice, produced in Western Europe between about 500 until 1600 CE and required hours of painstaking labor by artists and scribes. They are so called because of the use of gold and silver leaf which illuminates the text and accompanying illustrations. Works from the gallery’s permanent art collection will continue to be featured as part of #hydeartgallery’s temporary remote programming. #limbourgbrothers #belleheures #johnofberry #ducdeberry #illuminatedmanuscript #goldleaf #silverleaf #paris #15thcentury #artcollection #remotelearning #remoteexhibit #remoteart #grossmontcollege @grossmontedu @grossmontoutreach #elcajon #sandiego See more

In Appreciation By Harry Lum Ink on paper, 1983 24x18 Donation from Erv and Pat Metzger, June 2010.... #hydegallerycollection From March 20 until April 7, 1995 @hydeartgallery presented a retrospective exhibition of works by California Artist and former Grossmont College professor, Harry Lum. Lum joined the art department faculty in 1972 and was retiring at the end of the spring 1995 semester following more than 20 years of teaching painting, drawing, and design. This exhibition was a survey of works Lum had produced from the early 1960's to present. Included were oil paintings from the 1960's, light boxes from the early 1970's, fiberglass paintings from the late 1970's, acrylic paintings from the l980's and a current series of acrylic diptych paintings and watercolors. The exhibit included significant works addressing the artist concerns - ranging from the historical and contemporary issues of war and holocaust to works that examine transcendent concerns of the artist exploring poetic and philosophic themes. Several generations of artists known to San Diego arts patrons had studied with Lum and his influence upon these artists is found in their experimentation with media and seriousness of approach to their subject matter. Harry Lum studied and eventually lectured at University of California, Berkeley and taught art classes at the Richmond Art Center before joining the Grossmont College Art Department in 1972. Works from the gallery’s permanent art collection will continue to be featured as part of #hydeartgallery’s temporary remote programming. #harrylum #inappreciation #grossmontfaculty #formerfaculty #drawingandpainting #ink #drawing #figuredrawing #artcollection #remotelearning #remoteexhibit #remoteart #grossmontcollege @grossmontedu @grossmontoutreach #elcajon #sandiego See more

Spiral No. 11 By Phyllis Kudder Sullivan Stoneware, 2000 15x12.5x6.5 Donation from Artist, 2002.... #hydegallerycollection The counterclockwise spiral, known as the Levogyre, is the universally recognized symbol of motion. Found in natural forms such as the nautilus shell, as well as ancient art, it represents transition and change, expansion and contraction: kinetic energy. I weave the double walled spiral with stoneware coils. The open weave of my forms allows visual access into the interior thus linking the work with the traditional aspects of clay as a utilitarian medium. I think of my work as vessels, containers, that maintain their structural integrity while exposing and being defined by the volume within. As one walks around the spiral the multiple overlapping walls create varying degrees of density and airiness, creating an illusion of constant change as we move through time. -Artist statement from Viewpoint Ceramics 2002, National Juried Competition on display at the Hyde Art Gallery from January 28 until February 14, 2002. Phyllis Kudder Sullivan is a ceramist who has exhibited her interlaced ceramicsculpture in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughoutthe US and internationally. Her work has been accepted into internationalbiennales in the US, South Korea, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, and Australia. Shehas been awarded Artist Residencies across the globe. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Artsand is a Senior Professor in the School of Arts, Communications and Design at LIU-Post. La Belle Etelka By Georges Rouault Lithograph, c. 1924-27 12.75x19.75, trial proof Printed by Edmond Frapier. Acquired in 1968.... #hydegallerycollection Georges Rouault (1871 - 1958) was a French painter, draughtsman, and printer, often associated with Fauvism and Expressionism, and is noted for his heavily contoured style and glowing color schemes. Born into poverty, at age 14 Georges became an apprentice at a glass painter and restorer’s workshop. After an academic education, Rouault met Henri Matisse and other Fauvist artists, with whom he started to exhibit in 1905. Themes of court scenes, clowns, and prostitutes start to emerge in his work, which can be read as moral and social criticism rooted in the artist’s Christian faith. In 1924, Georges Rouault began producing lithography. Several series of lithographs were produced for the publisher Edmond Frapier, some as illustrations for poems. This particular print was part of a series called Cirque Forain, which depicted circus people, acrobats, and performers. The exact number of designs that Rouault created for Frapier is unknown. For Hyde Art Gallery’s exhibition Lucid Dreaming (January 30 - February 28, 2017), this piece was displayed next to a Mother and Child figurine from the Akan people of southern Ghana. African Art with its highly abstracted forms was very influential to early 20th century artists. It inspired them to produce artwork that was not bound by what the eye saw, gave them license to break loose from academic traditions of rendering observable reality, and allowed them to distort figuration. Can you see the influence on this particular Rouault print? Works from the gallery’s permanent art collection will continue to be featured during the fall 2020 semester as part of #hydeartgallery’s temporary remote programming. #georgesrouault #labelleetelka #lithograph #printmaking #matisse #cirqueforain #fauvism #fauvist #expressionism #africanart #akanpeople #ghana #circus #performer #paris #artcollection #remotelearning #remoteexhibit #remoteart #grossmontcollege @grossmontedu @grossmontoutreach #elcajon #sandiego @ Grossmont College See more

Three Cups By Erik Gronborg Ceramic, 1974 Various sizes Donation from Artist, 1974... #hydegallerycollection Danish artist Erik Gronborg has spent most of his life in the United States, primarily on the west coast. His long teaching career included the University of California-Berkeley, Berkeley, CA; Reed College in Portland, OR; the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NM; San Diego State University, San Diego, CA; and finally Mira Costa College in Oceanside, CA. He is a noted artist in several fields besides ceramics, including printmaking, woodworking, and sculpture. Since his retirement he has become a full time studio artist and in addition is well-known in the gardening field. His home and garden, an ongoing labor of love for over 30 years, have become a showcase both for how to live harmoniously with nature and how to blend art and plants. In all my work, ceramics, wood, and cast metal sculpture, and furniture, I try to express the spontaneous gesture of shaping the material: the soft fluid nature of clay yielding to any force, and in the wood the quick, free cut of the bandsaw through a random log. And these gestures are given a sense of order through the emphasis on the construction of the work, both in clay and wood. In recent years, I have worked on extending these ideas of the random with the controlled to our garden, combining my ceramic forms with plants, with both contributing to the total sculptural expression. I see our house and garden as a constantly evolving work of art. Untitled, from the Discarded Library By Alexia Markarian Acrylic on paper, 1991 18x15 artist frame #hydegallerycollection... In the Los Angeles Times, Leah Ollman, wrote that Alexia Markarian’s paintings gave birth to a fantastic and rich realm somewhere between the organic and the surreal, where base instincts ruled and a seductive gleam filled the air. Markarian has been making challenging and often confrontational artwork in a very wide range of media - paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and mixed media - for more than 30 years. A restless experimenter and creator, she is known for using common materials in unexpected ways throughout her sculptural and design work, and presenting work that is psychologically charged. Markarian lives and works in El Cajon, CA. Swipe through to see this particular work from our collection installed in the Hyde Gallery for Lucid Dreaming (January 30 - February 28, 2017) an exhibition presenting the work of two local San Diego artists, Alexia Markarian and Barbara Sexton, mounted alongside a diverse selection of works by early 20th century masters and several pieces from the San Diego Mesa College African Art Collection. Birmingham Race Riot By Andy Warhol Silkscreen on paper, 1964 24x20" From X + X (Ten Works by Ten Painters). Acquired from Wadsworth Athanaem in 1967.... #hydegallerycollection Between April 3 and May 10, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. led a campaign of nonviolent direct action to bring attention to the integration efforts of Black Americans in Birmingham, Alabama. The campaign used a variety of nonviolent methods of confrontation, including sit-ins at libraries and lunch counters, kneel-ins by black visitors at white churches, and a march to the county building to mark the beginning of a voter-registration drive. Those peacefully protesting were viciously attacked by police with dogs and water hoses. Photos of this event taken by American photographer Charles Moore and published in Life Magazine shocked the American public and expedited the end of racial segregation in that region. Andy Warhol appropriated Charles Moore images because he was sufficiently aware of their visual power, consistent with his aim of showing the dark underside of the American Dream and wanted to include them in his 1964 exhibition title Death in America at the Sonnabend Gallery in Paris. The artwork in the Hyde Art Gallery’s collection is a smaller print that Warhol contributed to a portfolio of work by ten artists, published the year after the riot. This print commemorates the tensions in American culture at the time, and forcefully illustrates the distance of the arts from such events. Swipe through to see installation images of this particular work from the Hyde Art Gallery’s exhibition Select Works from the Permanent Collection on display from August 23 - September 10, 2004.
