Challenge: Paraplegia Sports: Paracycling, Paratriathlon, Alpine Skiing, Mountain Biking Personal Story: Muffy Davis began skiing at age three. In the snow-covered mountains of Sun Valley, Idaho, she dedicated much of her time to training for the Olympic Games and as a teen was a top-ranked junior ski racer. At the age of 15, her dreams of competing alongside the world’s best skiers came to a halt when she lost control on a ski run at Bald Mountain and, at a speed of over 45 ...miles per hour, crashed into a safety fence and trees. The crash left her paralyzed from the chest down. Ever the optimist, Muffy maintained her competitive spirit and began to channel her energy into training for the Paralympic Games. She went on to win a bronze medal at the 1998 Nagano games in Women’s Slalom, and three silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City Paralympic Games in Women’s Giant Slalom, Women’s Super G and Women’s Downhill. She continued to diversify her portfolio, Muffy picked up competitive cycling and later went on to win a record-setting three gold medals in handcycling at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. Amidst continued training and her duties as a board member of the International Paralympic and USOC Paralympic Advisory Committees, Muffy also serves as an Idaho state legislator and is the founder of the Women’s Athletic Foundation. Although her schedule is full, she still finds time to join other CAF athletes at local clinics to learn new sports including sledge hockey and curling. Shout out to Lance Weir and Team Chase/Holland. They have cycled 305 miles so far - including 30 miles this past Sunday - as we head into the middle of Week 4 of the CAF Community Challenge. As Bill Walton says, "Until you've ridden your bike with Lance Weir, you have not been on a bike!" Lance Weir, a Marine Corps Reservist, was dislodging a canoe in a river when afterwards he leaned headfirst into the water to retrieve his baseball cap. His head hit a submerged rock, shatte...ring his C5 vertebrae, and he became a quadriplegic. 17 years after his injury, Nico Marcolongo from the Operation Rebound: CAF program encouraged Lance to enrich his life through sport. Lance discovered that he was not only good at shooting an air rifle, he was one of the best in his category and was identified as a Paralympic hopeful. Over the years, he has earned 8 gold medals at both the Marine Corps Trials and the Warrior Games. Lance also cycles on an adaptive tandem hand cycle and has completed CAF’s Million Dollar Challenge, a 620-mile ride from San Francisco to San Diego, and other endurance rides including the grueling Silver State 508.
