Hyaena has a Patreon! If you've been following us, then you know that Hyaena Gallery has been around since 2006, showing the best Dark, LowBrow, Underground, Outsider, and Horror Art. The gallery is so much more than that, however. As curator, I highlight literature, oddities, and anything I feel is important or interesting to me...the things I feel need to be shared and celebrated. #Destroytheday is my daily meditation from Instagram, where each morning I share a story about... true crime, art, dark history, and other assorted weirdness. I'm using Patreon as a place where these stories can be collected in one part for easier enjoyment, as opposed to being broken up into 2 to 7 part on other platforms. Tags on the posts will help you find related stories as you explore the archive. Almost every day, a new story will be available for free here for everyone to enjoy. Joining a membership tier gives you access to the growing #Destroytheday story archives, as well as other bonuses. I do ask that if you truly appreciate what I do, please join and think of this as a virtual tip jar. All monthly contributions will help this small business function and allow me to continue with my (mostly) daily story postings. I'll also eventually be offering exclusive content aimed specifically towards artists seeking information to help them navigate and survive in the art world. I'm Bill Shafer, and I approve this message. - Support art outside the mainstream - https://www.patreon.com/hyaenagallery

Signed official letter from former LAPD Chief, Daryl Gates. $40 DM or email [email protected] to purchase. Daryl Gates (1926 2010) was the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1978 to 1992. His length of tenure was second only to that of William H. Parker. As chief of police with the rank of general, he took a hardline, aggressive, paramilitary approach to law enforcement. Gates is co-credited with the creation of SWAT teams with LAPD's John Nelson.... Gates also co-founded the D.A.R.E. program. Gates publicly questioned the effectiveness of community policing, usually electing not to work with community activists and prominent persons in communities in which the LAPD was conducting major anti-gang operations. He helped form the specialized CRASH units (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums), that were depicted in the 1988 film Colors. During Gates’ time as Chief, the LAPD was in the middle of a War on Drugs and was known for excessive use of force by anti-gang units, aggressive neighborhood sweeps like Operation Hammer in 1987 (criticized as a harassment operation whose main goal was to intimidate young black and Hispanic men). The operation lasted several years, with multiple sweeps, and resulted in over 25,000 arrests. This was not unprecedented: during the run-up to the 1984 Olympic Games, Mayor Tom Bradley empowered Gates to take all of the city's gang members known and suspected into custody, where they remained until shortly after the Games' conclusion. In the years after the Olympic games Gates, Mayor Bradley and city council officials found a way to continue the sweeping policies initially meant for the duration of the Olympic games by reviving old, anti-syndicalist laws, to jail predominantly black and Latino youth, even though the overwhelming numbers of people arrested were never charged. Gates’ leadership was attributed with much of the blame for the Rodney King incident and the massive riots that followed. He was pushed into retirement shortly thereafter. Gates was mentioned in a large number of rap and metal songs in the aftermath of the LA riots. Some of the more notable include Ice Cube's "The Wrong Nigga to Fuck With", which dedicates a whole verse to a depiction of Gates's being decapitated and cooked like fried chicken, and Body Count's "Cop Killer," which caused widespread controversy.

Help put this Kickstarter campaign over the top. Kathy McCarty's album "Dead Dog's Eyeball" brought the songs of Daniel Johnston to the attention of many. This will be the first time this album will be available on vinyl. It was initially released in 1994 on CD and cassette. You need this!

One more cool item for Vincent Price fans... Darling of Day Playbill from 1968, the George Abbott Theater, New York. SIGNED by Vincent Price, Patricia Routledge, and Brenda Forbes. $125 DM or email [email protected] to purchase. ... This musical flopped, with many critics stating that Vincent Price was "woefully miscast." The show opened January 27th, 1968 and survived for only 31 performances. The New York Times review called the musical bland and stale, but praised Routledge, who "...really can sing." It said that Price plays with "friendly blandness...he sings, too, and not badly." Routledge and Forbes were both respected Engkish actresses, with long film and theater careers. Even the great Vincent Price couldn't win every time.

These are the last of the James Bonner candles that we have in stock...With no conventions, he's been more focused on new sculptures and we probably won't see any more candles for quite a while... Carrie, Sleestak, Scarface, and Alice Cooper from Prince of Darkness. These are big pieces, 10" to 13" tall, and roughly 3 to 4 lbs of wax each. $40 each...grab em quick. (Scarface also available in a yellow/gold color)... Available for pickup, or we ship worldwide (let us know where you are located for a shipping quote). DM or email [email protected] to purchase. Note: Most people never light these. I personally own lots of things that I don't set on fire. These candles are more so intended as an affordable way for folks to own Bonner's awesome sculpts, as opposed to the badass cold cast bronze pieces that we offer.

...and here's yet another installment of our ongoing series of $20 Doodles! This time, it's the living badass, DANO @artbydano A Southern California staple, Dano’s art is a pure throwback to true LowBrow: Beautiful women, fast cars, a heavy influence of Grindhouse cinema, and 100% Rock n’ Roll. The work is vibrant and full of motion, pulling elements from folks like Tarantino and underground comics to make art that is just awesome.... Dano is an Emmy award winning storyboard artist who has worked for Warner Brothers and Walt Disney studios. His first solo exhibit with us, way back in 2007, was featured in the now defunct Femme Fatales magazine. Man, I really love his art...don't miss this opportunity! Remember, we've only got 20 pieces available, so this is on a first come, first served basis...and he's drawing musicians only, because why the Hell not? Here’s another insane piece of true crime history "Gacy Horror House Relic" A vial filled with actual brick debris from the demolition of John Wayne Gacy's home at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue in Des Plaines, Illinois. Each vial is sealed with wax and has a unique serial number which can be registered online for authenticity. Two sizes:... 2 ml vial = $129.00 5 ml vial = $199.00 DM or email [email protected] John Wayne Gacy's home at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue in Des Plaines, Illinois hosted the 1970's most depraved crimes: 33 homicides by a maniac later called "The Killer Clown." 26 of his victims, all boys and young men, were buried in the crawlspace of this house. In March 1979 the home was leveled under a Judge's order. For years the lot sat vacant, a stark reminder of the victims Gacy buried there while masquerading as an upright citizen. During the demolition, a Mt. Prospect laborer carried home debris as souvenirs, mortifying his family. Decades after Gacy's execution, they're relics of a defining moment in serial killer culture. This is actual brick debris from Gacy’s House of Horrors...and you can own it! "Joyce. I'm sure you know by now that uncle Link got Jonny on the Gacy home knockdown but he disobeyed orders and hauled a bunch of that debris up here. I have forbidden him to keep any of it here...Tell Link that Jonny will need help getting it moved from the garage, to where I have no idea...sooner the better." - Portion of October 1979 letter by laborer's family

Here it is, your chance to own a crazy piece of true crime history "Ted Bundy VW Relic" A 2 ml vial filled with actual metallic scale from Ted Bundy's infamous 1968 Volkswagon Beetle. Each vial is sealed with wax and has a unique serial number which can be registered online for authenticity.... $199.00 DM or Email [email protected] In 1975, serial killer Ted Bundy was arrested driving his 1968 VW Bug. This is the car that Bundy used to lure and transport his victims (he had removed the front passenger seat and door handle to make his grim task easier). A Utah police officer later bought the car at a police auction and it remained in his yard for 20 years. By 2002, it came into the possession of Jonathan Davis from the band Korn. On MTV, Davis stated that he was planning on opening a museum where the infamous VW would be on display. In preparation, he had the rusted metallic scale stripped from the vehicle. The planned MOJO Museum never materialized, and the car is now currently on exhibit across the country the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in TN. These vials contain the very material that Davis removed from the Volkswagenactual pieces of Bundy’s death car! A killer addition to any collection.

Here’s a surprise artist jumping on our $20 Doodles: Johnny Ryan! From Wikipedia: Johnny Ryan is an American alternative comics creator. He created Angry Youth Comix, a comic book published by Fantagraphics, and Blecky Yuckerella. He also created Pig Goat Banana Cricket, a TV show made jointly with Dave Cooper, that Nickelodeon picked up. He is now the story editor for Looney Tunes Cartoons. In a throwback to the days of underground comix, Ryan's oeuvre is generally an attem...pt to be as shocking and politically incorrect as possible. We love him and his artwork. Johnny is taking requests (keep them reasonable!) and right now has only 10 slots available, due to his work schedule. So jump on them quicklywe are not sure if he will have time to do more later, or ever again! Go to our website and click the flyer!

Are you ready for the next installment of our $20 Doodles? We've asked Kat Philbin to join the madness. Kat Philbin is a long-time Hyaena favorite. Her artwork has been described as cute, quirky, and wonderful. Kat's illustrations are a combination of Edward Gorey's aesthetic and Shel Silverstein's perspective which hold up well against the artwork of the timeless books we've loved since childhood. There is a perfect balance of sweetness and the sublime in her art that fuses ...charm with a memorable dark humor. Due to scheduling constraints, we are limiting all requests to ANIMALS ONLY ...but that's what Kat does best! Remember, we've only got 20 pieces available, so this is on a first come, first served basis. Go to our website: http://www.hyaenagallery.com/2020_20dollardoodles.html
