What are the differences between a paladin and a knight? A knight is a mounted warrior, able to maintain horses and armor necessary to serve as a mounted warrio...r, and often but not always a member of the nobility of whatever kingdom he hailed from. Historically the only paladins were twelve knights who served Charlemagne in the 8th century, and serve a similar legendary role to Arthur’s knights of the round table. But usage of that term has broadened. , Paladin came back into use because of a tv show called Paladin Have Gun Will Travel in the 1960s. He was a warrior who was dedicated to the cause of justice and could be hired by anyone for a price sometimes just a thank you. It was reused in the modern sense in Dungeons and Dragons, where it was used to describe a warrior, typically a knight (in the military sense, not usually the social one) who is a sworn brother of a militant order. That is, he is a warrior-monk in the European sense, not the Asian one. From there, the usage has further broadened to describe a warrior who is dedicated to a cause in a similar fashion to a monk’s devotion. Captain America and Wonder Woman could be called modern paladins. In the general context of medieval fantasy, a knight (without further definition) is a mounted warrior who serves a lord while a paladin is a knight who serves the church. We have gaming books.
