This week, our COVID-19 vaccine clinic opened its doors to family members of Huntington employees and affiliated physicians. Albin and Olivia Leones, father and sister of Mellanie Leones, RN, pediatrics, were all smiles as they received their first doses of the Pfizer vaccine. What an honor it has been to meet and protect those who have been supporting our caregivers during this long fight. Thank you to all of the members of our extended Huntington family! #myc19vaccine #VaccinatePasadena #COVID19Vaccine

From feeling perfectly healthy to being diagnosed with aortic stenosis a potentially life-threatening heart condition characterized by the narrowing of the aortic valve opening Mary Lynne Knighten turned to Azhil (Alex) Durairaj, MD, medical director of cardiology, for help. Mary Lynne underwent a procedure called TAVR, a minimally invasive alternative to open heart surgery, to treat her condition. Dr. Durairaj and his whole team were fantastic, she says. Thank you to... everyone at Huntington Hospital for saving my life. Read more of Mary Lynne’s story at: www.huntingtonhospital.org/patient-story/aortic-stenosis/

We are proud to be recognized by Blue Shield of California with a Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) for Maternity Care designation, as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. This distinction is a testament to our commitment to provide excellent and equitable maternity care. The BDC for Maternity Care designation is a significant achievement for not only our hospital as a whole, but particularly for our team of dedicated nurses, physicians and staff from our Family Birth Center and Mother Baby Unit who help deliver and care for over 3,000 babies every year. The current COVID-19 surge is the result of Thanksgiving gatherings and travel, and the upcoming holidays could create a new wave of infections if health orders are not followed. Please help us stop this surge by continuing to wear a mask and physical distance as you leave your home for essential work and activities only, and refrain from gathering with anyone outside of your household. We’re committed to doing our part this holiday season and we encourage you to do yours. ...#stopthesurge #COVID19 www.huntingtonhospital.org/COVID19

Thank you to the Pasadena Police Air Operations Section and the Foothill Air Support Team (FAST), as well as Santa and Mrs. Claus, for once again delivering toys to our pediatric department. Due to COVID-19, we weren’t able to have our patients greet the Clauses, but they will be able to watch a recording of the visit on hospital-issued iPads to lift their spirits. Nichole Ballweg, RN, CCU nurse manager, and her team have experience dealing with challenges. Patients in our Critical Care Unit (CCU) are impacted by traumatic injury, stroke, advanced heart disease, pneumonia or other extremely serious conditions that require fast, expert care. When the pandemic struck, the unit’s 115 staff members acted quickly. Partnering with our infection prevention and control experts, they expanded our CCU’s capacity from 30 beds to 46 beds. This is... truly a remarkable group of people, Nichole says of her colleagues. "They go to extraordinary lengths to bring the best of care to our patients and they have continued their work without pause during the pandemic." Above all, Nichole singles out the nurses and aides with whom she works with for special praise. It’s hard for me to find the words for how brave and selfless this group of people is, she says. They come in every day and suit up to do a very difficult job with a great attitude. We’re all in this together.

We are taught that a smile is the shortest distance between two hearts and a universal way to connect with people. However, with COVID-19’s impact, it is harder to make that connection behind a mask or PAPR hood. The clinical team currently on 5 East (who was relocated from 4 West to support COVID-19 patient care) found a creative way to share their smiles and connect from behind the mask. They created a beautiful display that juxtaposes photos of team members wearing masks with photos that reveal the heartfelt smiles of the compassionate people behind the masks for patients and visitors to see when on their unit!
