Fear can be paralyzing. In entrepreneurship, fear affects our decision-making and often holds us back. These fears can be anything fear of failure, fear of change, fear of loss, fear of embarrassment, fear of rejection, and so on. We’ve become conditioned to avoid what’s fearful. The attempt to avoid fear is part of what psychologists call the Jonah Complex: The evasion of one’s own growth, the setting of low levels of aspiration, the fear of doing what one is capable of d...oing, voluntary self-crippling, pseudo-stupidity, mock humility. We’ll never overcome our fears until we move through them, not around them. For example, the fear of the dark isn’t solved by turning on nightlights. Light doesn’t eliminate the fear of the dark; it only eliminates the dark. The point is not to avoid or eliminate fear, but to acknowledge it, harness it, and make a conscious effort to work through it. Where there’s fear, there’s power, so use your fears; don’t let them use you. That is how you become fearless. When Haley Pavone was a junior in college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, she founded her own shoe company: Pashion Footwear.
