It’s never enough to just assume that employees will be on their best behavior. It’s important to articulate what is and isn’t appropriate in the work environment to ensure situations like these never present themselves. If you're looking to stay compliant and provide proper training for your employees, contact us at (530) 680-HRIQ (4747) and request a consultation! There are everyday parts of life that as employers, we don’t realize we must think about in regards to employees and what we provide in the work environment. One of the most overlooked requirements is Senate Bill 142. This bill requires employers to have a designated private space for breastfeeding employees to lactate. Although this has been a requirement for quite some time, the list of accommodations is expanding every year. If an employee feels they were not given the tim...e and space needed to pump breast milk, or claim they feared retaliation for asking, an employer can be fined $100 a day. Although there can be exemptions made for employers under 50, you must apply for an undue hardship in order to not comply with this law. More than 50% of new mothers are reentering the workforce between 6 months to 1 year, so this requirement is likely going to impact all businesses, big or small. If you're looking to stay compliant and provide proper training for your employees, contact us at (530) 680-HRIQ (4747) and request a consultation! Anyone who has grown up around the ag industry knows how important employees are to farm owners and their businesses. The ability to create a flexible work schedule for laborers plays a major role in a farmer’s success, which is why understanding the agricultural specific labor law updates and how to maneuver them is the key to having a successful operation in today’s society. 2020 brought a lot of changes in regards to agricultural worker employment laws, one of which chang...es the definition of overtime altogether. Time and a half is now considered 9 hours in a single workday, and 50 hours in a single workweek. California determined that agricultural laborers engage in back breaking work, and need the ability to earn a proper wage in overtime hours. AB1066 intends to lower the requirement for overtime hours more and more over the next four years, and is reinforcing this bill through hefty fines in order to ensure compliance. The burden of fault is now being placed on employers to combat human trafficking in the state of California. SB970 requires that all California lodging and transit employees be provided at least 20 minutes of interactive or classroom training that teaches them how to identify the signs and report suspicious activity indicative of human trafficking. The fines for not providing this can be enough to put a small business out, starting at $500 per employee in addition to liabilit...y for any misconduct that occurs as a result of employees inability to identify signs of human trafficking. The definition of human trafficking is much different than what we once knew. This $150 billion dollar industry includes not only sexual exploitation, but forced labor acts and over 50% of victims are male. Human trafficking includes exploiting the labor of agricultural workers, massage parlor workers, nail salon technicians, and restaurant waitresses and waiters. Human trafficking can also be described as modern day slavery, and is defined as illegal exploitation of a person. It is suspected that many of us come into contact with human trafficking victims multiple times a day without knowing anything unlawful is occuring. Protect your business and educate your staff on how to identify and report human trafficking. Workplace diversity is often a huge factor in not only the success of a business, but the type of talent you can acquire as well. The Workplace Intelligence Report found that 43% of respondents were driven to action based on whether or not there was a diverse workplace. Often, we find that a more diverse workplace feels more inclusive, thereby making it far more attractive to potential candidates. If you're looking to create a more diverse workplace, contact us at (530) 680-HRIQ (4747) and request a consultation! We'd be glad to help guide you with more information like this!

The burgeoning Gig Economy has been a big part of California’s reemergence from the recession a decade ago. Intuit estimates that by 2020, nearly 40% of American workers will be independent contractors, and with the flexibility in both location and time offered by 1099 work, it’s really no surprise why. Due to the recent AB-5 bill, many rules have changed in California labor law as to who can be classified as a 1099 contractor. It is important to consult with your HR professional to ensure that you’re operating properly under the current guidelines! If you're looking to stay compliant and provide proper training for your employees, contact us at (530) 680-HRIQ (4747) and request a consultation! New Sexual Harassment Laws SB 778 requires businesses with five or more employees to provide sexual-harassment-prevention training to all workers by Jan. 1, 2021, and every two years thereafter. This expands the training requirements significantly as previously employers with 50 or more employees only had to provide training to supervisory employees. Non-supervisory employees must receive one hour of training while supervisory employees must continue to receive two hours of ...training. Not providing this training is a major violation and can be used against you in the event of a lawsuit. If you're looking to stay compliant and provide proper training for your employees, contact us at (530) 680-HRIQ (4747) and request a consultation!
