Understanding how and why species like the North Pacific loggerhead move among habitats is crucial to helping them navigate threats, said study senior author Larry Crowder, the Edward Ricketts Provostial Professor at Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station. Emerging technologies and analyses can help illuminate these journeys. https://woods.stanford.edu//stanford-researchers-and-other

The arrival of juvenile white sharks in the Monterey Bay began around 2014 and coincided with several climate events that brought warmer waters to the Bay Area coastline -- including a particularly curious influx of warm ocean water scientists dubbed the "warm blob." https://www.nbcbayarea.com//white-shark-influx-in/2511699/

Our study shows that synergistic interactions among multiple ecosystem stressors can greatly increase the risk of population collapse in vulnerable regions like the Arctic, said Stanford University professor and Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions affiliated researcher Kevin Arrigo, who is lead author on the study. Synergies between stressors can double or more the populations’ risk of collapse added Hopkins' Fiorenza Micheli, co-author of the study. https://oceansolutions.stanford.edu//novel-modeling-techni

In 2014, Jeremy Goldbogen, a marine biologist at Hopkins Marine Station, stuck video cameras on the backs of blue whales, hoping to learn more about their feeding habits. When he retrieved the footage, he realized he had been photobombed. https://www.nytimes.com//sc/remoras-suckerfish-whales.html

‘People ask me, Do you think that there will be coral reefs in 50 or 100 years? I think that the answer is definitely yes, but they’re not going to look the same as they do now.’ - excellent article about Palumbi Lab grad student Elora Lopez' research!

We didn’t know what to expect when we started evaluating the program’s health and conservation impacts, but were continually amazed that the data suggested such a strong link between improvements in health care access and tropical forest conservation, said Isabel Jones, the study’s lead author and recent Hopkins Marine Station graduate. https://news.stanford.edu//10/26/healthcare-climate-solut/
