My final post for Hollywood Park, which closed 5 years ago today.

I loved that horse. He was very kind, very gentle, said Dr. Day. I have about 30 stallions on the farm, and he was by far the most affectionate. He didn't have an evil bone in his body.

Shared Belief, who won the Grade III Hollywood Prevue Nov. 10 and the Grade I CashCall Futurity Dec. 14 by a combined 13 lengths, was a unanimous selection as Horse of the Meet in the annual media poll as racing wrapped forever Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park with the conclusion of the 27-day Autumn season. Owned by a partnership that includes television and radio personality Jim Rome’s Jungle Racing LLC, KMN Racing LLC, Jason Litt, Alex Solis II, George Todaro and Hall of... Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, the 2-year-old Candy Ride gelding remained undefeated in three starts with his two wins over Cushion Track. Also chosen 2-year-old and 2-year-old male, Shared Belief is a leading contender for the Eclipse Award as division champion and the early favorite for the 2014 Kentucky Derby. Other winners were Streaming, who became a Grade I winner in only her second start with a 10-1 upset in the Hollywood Starlet Dec. 7, as 2-year-old filly, Broken Sword, who led throughout to take the Bayakoa Stakes Dec. 7, as 3-year-old filly, Blueskiesnrainbows, part of a 1-2-3 finish for Hollendorfer in the Grade III Native Diver Stakes Dec. 14, as older male and Majestic Stride, who won the Grade III Vernon O. Underwood Stakes Nov. 28, as sprinter. Seek Again, who gave trainer John Gosden his first Hollywood Derby victory in 30 years Dec. 1, and Egg Drop, who won the closest Matriarch in history the same day when she defeated Discreet Marq by a nose, won double honors. Owned by breeder Juddmonte Farms, Seek Again was 3-year-old and 3-year-old male while Egg Drop was older female and female turf horse. In a close vote, Julio’s Gold, a 3-year-old Brother Derek filly who won against $16,000 stock Nov. 24, then stepped up to the $25,000 level and won Dec. 20 on turf, was selected claimer. On the human side, trainer honors went to Hollendorfer, who set an Autumn record with seven stakes wins, eclipsing the mark of six originally set by Hall of Famer Charlie Whittingham in 1984. Rafael Bejarano was honored as top jockey as he won his sixth riding title at Hollywood Park. Four of his 37 victories came in stakes races, matching Corey Nakatani and Victor Espinoza. Gonzalo Nicolas, who won nine races, was chosen apprentice.
