Can you spot the furry friend in this tree?! He surely sees us and, chances are, he won’t come down for that very reason. We receive lots of calls for feral cats stuck in trees but rarely are they actually stuck. Cats are both predators and prey animals, making a tree an ideal hangout. Although climbing down may not be as graceful, a cat can almost always find their way to the ground without assistance. In some cases, attempting to rescue a cat may put both the rescuer a...nd the cat at risk of serious injury. In this particular case, ACOs observed this cat to be relaxed and healthy, basking in the sun. It was determined to leave him or her be and check in later, but not before leaving some wet food at the bottom of the tree for encouragement!

Meanwhile, our field services team is on call 24-7 to respond to animal related emergencies within San Benito County. Our doors may close, but the job of a Hollister Animal Shelter employee never ends! Thank you for letting us serve YOU!

ACO’s had an early start serving the wonderful community of San Benito County. Officers first responded to a loose horse in a residential neighborhood. They were able to identify an owner and the horse was returned. Shortly after, officers responded to a deer caught in fruit netting and in distress. With the help of some animal loving community members, ACO’s were able to cut the thick fence netting tangled along the buck’s antlers and watch as he happily trotted away. #hollisteranimalshelter #wildlife #animalcontrol

Lucky for this kitty, a recycling truck was driving through an easement road and noticed him struggling to get his head free from a chain link fence. Officer Morris and Officer Bautista were quick to respond, working methodically to free the terrified cat without injury. We are happy to report that this lucky guy is recovering well at the shelter, where staff will search for rescue! Way to go, ACOs!

Hollister Animal Care and Services is working closely with other agencies in anticipation of any potential evacuation of animals. In an effort to be best prepared, we are compiling a list of volunteers who are willing to take in evacuated livestock within our county, if needed. We have also been in contact with surrounding animal control agencies to discuss planning and ideas. Please know that, behind the scenes, our shelter staff is taking steps to be ready to care for your animals- large and small! Please contact our office at 831-636-4320 to be added to our list of potential volunteers.

Dogs can die when left inside of a hot car, even just for a quick trip to the store. Leaving an animal to suffer is a criminal offense. Hollister Police Animal Care and Services is reminding you to, please, leave your pets at home and keep them cool in this heat!
