Major forest restoration projects in the Yuba River watershed continue to gain momentum! Today our board of directors approved $6.5 million to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and advance landscape-scale treatments to improve forest health as part of the North Yuba Forest Partnership. During last week's Marysville Joint Unified School District board meeting, Superintendent Gary Cena highlighted some of our work to advance science education in Yuba County, including our support of SYRCL - The South Yuba River Citizens League's salmon tours (currently virtual due to COVID) and curriculum development with local educators for our future Watershed Experience Center. We're so proud to work with community leaders like Gary and of course Yuba County's rock star teachers! Check out this clip from the meeting: t.co/hDYkmJ4GM6
In honor of International Day of Women in Science, we recognize the invaluable contributions of the women in our workforce and in the California water community and the path they are paving for future generations. We spoke to some of our early-career scientists on staff this week and asked them to share their experiences as women in STEM as well as advice they’d give to their younger selves. Gone fishing! We stocked 5,000 rainbow trout in Englebright Lake, last month. Half of the fish were released into the lake immediately and half were placed into pens at Skippers Cove Marina on Englebright Lake and fed trout chow to help them grow into larger, more attractive trophy-sized fish to attract anglers before being released in late November. The fish were grown at Smith's Saint Helena Trout Farm in Calistoga. This is a recreation benefit we provide as a regular part of our Federal Energy Regulatory Commission hydropower license.
Check out the latest in our mission video series highlighting our ability to generate more than 400 megawatts of clean, reliable, carbon-free hydroelectric power and why it's at the heart of our ability to support Yuba County, in addition to helping California meet its clean energy goals. Learn more about our hydropower operations and how we're investing that revenue back into our community: bit.ly/yubawater-communityimpact

California wildfires are becoming more common and destructive, with 2020 devastatingly breaking records, said General Manager Willie Whittlesey during this morning's ACWA conference statewide issues forum with the Public Policy Institute of California, U.S. Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region and the California Natural Resources Agency. Shared stewardship, innovative partnerships and large-scale forest restoration can all help reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and improve forest and watershed health.
