Hey Long Beach! Did you know 73 years ago today, November 2, 1947 Howard Hughes wooden plane, the H-4 prototype (or as it was most commonly known, the Spruce Go...ose) flew over the water off the coast here in Long Beach? After its one and only flight, the Spruce Goose sat in storage for more than 30 years before being put on display in a one-of-a-kind special dome built specifically for the Goose. If you haven’t already, make sure to check out our Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar located in our 4260 Atlantic Ave window display. The altar celebrates the lives of our staff’s family and the Latin American community of Long Beach. This Mexican tradition celebrated by many Long Beach residents, is rooted in Mesoamerican and Roman Catholic beliefs and celebrates the lives of loved ones who have passed away. The ofrenda (offering/ altar), like the one in our window... display, is a typical part of this celebration of life. It honors loved ones with photos, personal belongings, favorite foods, and can also include traditional decor such as papel picado, a tree of life, and sugar skulls. A lot of thought and meaning goes into creating an ofrenda. We invite to you learn more about this celebration that is so important to so many in our city. Though this celebration takes place in the first two days of November, we will continue to display our ofrenda until November 13 to allow everyone an opportunity to see it. We hope you had a love-filled Día de Los Muertos and continue to share the stories and memory of those who came before. A special thank you to @rancholoscerritos for allowing us to display copies of the Temple portraits in our ofrenda.
