It's time to brush up on your Hispanic history in the United States. This year marks the 300th anniversary of the founding of San Antonio. When you 'remember the Alamo' this year, remember our ancestors who built it.
From California to Florida, historical markers and monuments that trace the path of the 16th century Spanish explorers and missionaries are at risk. Let's do our part to educate our communities about the rich and complex history of our #Hispanic and #Mestizo heritage in the United States. Speak out against those who prefer to erase history rather than learn it.
Established in 1567 by a Spanish expedition in what is present-day Morganton, North Carolina, Fort San Juan marks the first European settlement in the interior of the United States.
Just letting everyone know the Hispanic Heritage Project has imaged the Pablo L. Martinez colonial collection. Should be online in about 60 days. Also Abebooks has a few copies of his guide on sale for $56.
Guess who graced our home today? The Lady in Gold, but only until our philanthropic partner, miarte.info posts it on their website (miarte.info) to sell.

Thanks to the generous donations of fine art from friends, collectors, and an art dealer, we now have a possible stream of income to continue our digitizing project of documents of New Spain. We encourage you to visit miArte.info. Check out our current collection to see if one of our pieces will fit perfectly in your home or office. Then invite your friends and family to visit the site. 100% of the proceeds goes to Hispanic Heritage Project.
This is a volunteer who we trained at the Durango Municipal Archive using our equipment to image the municipal documents. We have finished imaging the colonial documents and they asked permission to continue with our equipment to image more current records. Now their records will be preserved in digital form should the originals be damaged or destroyed.
Jorge, Lisa and Carlos who are donors and volunteers of the Hispanic Heritage Project examine the latest addition to the Escondido Family History Center’s library, the ten-volume set entitled Retoños de España en la Nueva Galicia. This is perhaps one of the most outstanding genealogy works to come out of Mexico. It is a compilation of research by Mariano Gonzalez Leal about the families of Los Altos de Jalisco. Many of these genealogies extend beyond that area. The Hispanic Heritage Project started the community book project to work with and help communities donate Hispanic genealogy materials in their libraries or family history centers. If you would like to start an Hispanic genealogy collection in your area contact us at [email protected].
Meet Eli Magaña, our Director of Communications and an excellent researcher. He and I had the opportunity of conducting, a couple of classes at Discovery Day, a genealogy conference in Chula Vista Saturday, May 21st. It was an enjoyable day and we had the opportunity of presenting our material in Spanish.
Hi everyone, I would like to let you all know that I am back in California after a very successful trip to Michoacan, Zacatecas, and Jalisco. We've gotten another commitment to add the growing list of our projects, this time from the Municipal Archive of Zamora, Michoacan, where we will digitize their small but important collection. We are also making steady progress in Guadalajara, and hope to expand in Zacatecas later this year. Please see some of the highlights from my trip. It is because of supporters like you that we are able to bring our history back to life! --Carlos
I'm finishing up my meetings at the State Archive of Jalisco. This archive holds more than one million documents pertaining to the former province of Nueva Galicia, from 1574 to 1824. We're hoping to provide this archive with the support they need to get their documents online so that we can help contribute to the study of the rich history of this state. Viva Jalisco!
