If you are a Veteran (or family of a Veteran), and homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless, we can help. Last year, Hospitality House served 45 veterans through emergency safety-net services and our Homeless Veterans Housing Program. Through a partnership with Friends of Nevada County Military, this program offers housing assistance (past due rent, unpaid utilities, etc.) and homeless prevention services to veterans and their families. For more information, please visit https://hhshelter.org/programs-services/veterans-housing/

It may be November, but our little garden at the shelter is still going strong. Our guests, like Bernice pictured, work in the garden every day to help with our sustainability efforts. Added support for the garden comes from donors, volunteers and our garden friends and partners, BriarPatch Food Co-op and Sierra Harvest. #farmtotable #culinarycooking #workingtogether
The Board of Directors would like to invite you to join the Legacy Circle, the Hospitality House planned giving program. The Legacy Circle offers a practical way for you to ensure self-sufficiency and housing for all, without affecting your current finances. I made the decision to include Hospitality House in my will because I want their good work to always live on and help people in need, even after I’m gone, said Jeff Leiter, local business owner and former City of Berkeley Mayor. I encourage others to think about the future of our communityit could be your family they end up helping. Please visit: https://hhshelter.org/giving/planned-giving/

When a small group of donors learned about the challenges Hospitality House faces in operating a shelter during a public safety power shutoff (PSPS), in addition to other outages that might come about throughout the year, they listened, learned and took action to help Hospitality House acquire a much-needed, full-building generator. When you have a group of people without options who are depending on you for food and lodging, uninterrupted power becomes a critical need, exp...lained one of the project donors, who wished to remain anonymous. Collectively, this small group of individuals donated the financial support needed to help Hospitality House introduce a 70 kW commercial Generac generator at the shelter, which has the strength to power the entire building. Two operating transfer switches tell the generator to fire up and power the building when it detects no electricity, ensuring the shelter continues to operate as safely as possible without disruption. Installation for the generator began in late September and is expected to conclude this month. We’d like to give our heartfelt thanks to our project donors for addressing this critical need and providing an immediate solution.
This month we’d like to acknowledge our friends at Telestream for their consistent commitment to our homeless community for over 10 years. Telestream specializes in products that make it possible to provide video content to any audience regardless of how it is created, distributed or viewed. Outside of video content, Telestream helps Hospitality House by providing ongoing financial support to further our services to those most vulnerable and at risk. Pre-pandemic, employees of Telestream also brought in their own donated food every month to cook and serve guests in our shelter, but despite being in a pandemic, Telestream’s support has not waived and as more families and individuals need help, they have continued to lend a helping hand. Thank you, Telestream! We appreciate you!
Our Volunteer Spotlight goes to Jo Ann DeSena! Jo Ann has been a part of the Hospitality House family since its nomadic days when guests found sanctuary at various churches each night, including her church, Peace Lutheran. I saw it in the church bulletin and immediately volunteered to cook, recalled Jo Ann, who has been cooking ever since (pre-pandemic).... Jo Ann’s devotion to those less fortunate has been ingrained in her since a young age. Her grandmother had a cherry and apricot orchard and while her grandmother didn’t own a vehicle or ever drive, she built a three-car garage on her property so the people working in her orchard would have a place to sleep each night. I carry on my Nana's legacy and provide for those that need a helping hand, explained Jo Ann. God Bless them. Through her years of cooking for those in need, Jo Ann has served many people, several of whom left lasting impact on her heart. One gentleman, who I observed back in the days when they slept at Peace began by never looking up, she recalled. He looked at the ground and did not communicate at all. It took him a very long time but little by little he began looking up. The final time I saw him, he smiled and asked how my day was going. That is what I call a miracle! Encounters like these remind us that each guest's journey back to housing and stability is different, but everyone needs fuel and nourishment to move forward. In time, guests began recognizing the nourishment Jo Ann provided and they began fondly referring to her as the "Sausage Mashed Potatoes and Gravy Lady," a moniker for one of her favorite meals to cook and share with our homeless community. We thank you, Jo Ann, for the countless meals you’ve made through the years. We miss seeing you at the shelter but appreciate your continued help from afar by donating food and financial support so we can serve your signature dish in your honor. Our volunteer program is expected to return when the County reaches Stage 4, but until then, we thank you, Sausage Mashed Potatoes and Gravy Lady!

We'd like to thank Coldwell Banker Grass Roots Realty, County of Nevada - Better Together, SPD Markets, BriarPatch Food Co-op, Telestream, B & C Ace Home & Garden Center, KVMR, The Union, YubaNet, Dignity Health Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, Clientworks, and Law Office of Minor & Keene for giving their enthusiastic support!
