Who knows about Selenium and that it's nutritionally essential for your body? It's not commonly talked about but you still need it! It pays a key roll in our metabolism, is necessary for thyroid function (actually the highest concentration of Selenium is found in the thyroid gland), protects us from damage caused by oxidative stress (basically it's a great antioxidant), can slow down age-related mental decline, and boosts the immune system. Selenium is found in two forms - inorganic which is found in soil and organic which is what plants converted the inorganic to. Both are good dietary sources. The best source for Selenium is Brazil nuts but if you don't like Brazil nuts seafood, meat, and enriched foods like macaroni or pasta.

Did you know Vitamin D is not a vitamin?!?! That's right! It's actually a hormone produced from cholesterol when your skin is exposed to sunshine. (The science behind it is really cool!) Hence "the sunshine vitamin" Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium. Vitamin D is also needed for strong bones and teeth, a healthy immune system, and plays a part in regulating insulin. The best practice is to sit outside for a few moments in the morning sun and you've 1) sta...rted your day off great and 2) gotten your daily vitamin d! You can also get some vitamin d from egg yokes, mushrooms, salmon, and fortified foods. The biggest problem with not getting enough vitamin D is that your body will not absorb calcium properly.
