K9 Recovering from Stabbing! LVMPD police dog "Hunter" was attacked last night while taking a suspect into custody. He was stabbed twice in the neck. Hunter i...s expected to recover, following expert medical care at the animal hospital. Hunter was vitally important in bringing a SWAT standoff situation to an end in the 7300 block of S. Early this morning, K-9 Mick was deployed to assist officers and deputies in taking a carjacking suspect into custody. During the apprehension, K-9 Mick was sh...ot and sustained a gunshot wound to his lower jaw and neck. K-9 Mick was quickly brought to the emergency vet, California Veterinary Specialists, and treated for his injuries which were not life threatening. K-9 Mick has already been released and is currently resting at home with his handler. K-9 Mick is expected to make a full recovery and return to active duty soon. We are very proud of K-9 Mick’s performance. The fact that no officers or deputies sustained any injuries were in large part because of K-9 Mick’s involvement. Mick and his brothers, Buck, Pak and Duke work hard every day to serve and protect the residents of Murrieta and surrounding cities. Message from Chief Brown... I regret to inform you that K9 Jack passed away last night after a short battle with cancer. His handler Matt Gomez and family memb...ers along with department representatives were at his side for support. Jack was an extremely dedicated, loyal and hard-working partner. He served his handler, the department and our community with great enthusiasm and drive and he undoubtedly saved a number lives and assisted in hundreds of arrests during his 4 years of dedicated service. Please keep Matt and his family in your prayers as they adjust to life without Jack. He will be sorely missed. The mayor and city council will present Officer Matt Gomez a gift in honor of Jack's service this Tuesday at 7pm in the council chambers. All are invited to attend.
