Healdsburg Garden Club 07.12.2020

We had a great turnout at our 2018 Plant Sale. In addition to a wide variety of well-priced and well-maintained plants and vegetables, we also sold accents for home and garden that included Mother's Day gift baskets, bird houses, tea cups filled with succulents, dried flower arrangements in teacups, and other small succulent planters. Garden Art & Supplies and Garden Services, such as clippers sharpening, and orchid repotting, and the Jumble Sale, including tools, pots, and gardening books, and the breakfast, lunch, and mimosa sales were popular with attendees. As always, all proceeds went toward college scholarships for Healdsburg High School, Geyserville High School, and Santa Rosa Junior College graduates

Garden club members are learning the elements and principles of design through flower arranging. Their garden designing will also benefit from honing their skills in floral design.

Polo de Lorenzo, the owner of Sonoma Horticulture Nursery and Gardens, and our host, led us around a beautiful pond on an attractive path where we saw 20-30 full grown rhododendrons and beautiful 6 foot by 6 foot azaleas in their full glory. We also saw a wide selection of shade-loving trees, shrubs and perennials. With 8 acres and over one and half miles of pathways to explore, we had a lot of fun.

Charlotte Torgovitsky of Home Ground Habitat Nursery, a naturalist, educator, and garden consultant, presented an interesting and beautiful slideshow about our local Birds and their Native Habitats. She also brought and taught us about an assortment of local habitat plants for the garden that provide for birds and the insects they depend upon.

Following a busy Annual Meeting discussing the upcoming plant sale and election of next year’s officers, among other things, our members were treated to a delightful presentation from Kate Frey, an international landscape designer and consultant. Kate shared her many gardening adventures creating healthy, ecological gardens in worldwide locations, ranging from Northern California to the Chelsea Flower Show in London, Japan, Malaysia and to a Prince’s organic farm in Saudi Arabia.

Jay Tripathi, president of Gardenworks, presented a beautiful slide show which illustrated various hardscape trends in landscape design. Many of the projects he described were known by our members. as Jay confined much of his talk to our local community. Before Jay's presentation, we had a lively business meeting, with lots a of great energy filling the room.

Healdsburg Garden Club members learned about the Oak Mound Cemetery Restoration Project which is being organized by the Healdsburg Museum and Historical Society. The Oak Mound Cemetery Restoration is in full swing with commitments and participation from local businesses, groups, and individuals. The heritage section of the cemetery is the resting place for the founders, families and characters that shaped Healdsburg in its’ early development. Jim Dreisback, the Project Manag...er, and Holly Hoods, Healdsburg Museum’s Curator, discussed the history of the cemetery and the plans that are in process to preserve this precious Healdsburg historical site. They also shared what has precipitated the launching of this project, why it is important, and discussed the fountain restoration project, which has captured the imagination and attention of many in our community.
