Connection is your most powerful parenting strategy and it plays a tremendous role in your child’s future. Today’s relationships plant the seeds that guide your child’s understanding of themselves and those around them. How we show up in relationship with our children and help them in seeing themselves is not something that we can mark off a checklist. It is a constant practice and requires our conscious effort. ... Practicing becomes easier with time, but if you don’t have a model to which to base your practice off of then therapy may provide the support that is needed to begin the journey. During times of extra stress we can so easily get ping-ponged by our emotions. Using a simple technique, such as grounding through your senses can help you calm your body and mind. Use this technique daily for it to become most effective. It is even better if you can practice at a time when you are not already stressed, and then use it again as you notice yourself becoming stressed. If you practice it with your child, then you are helping them learn a new coping skill.... If you do not remember the numbers associated with each sense, then just do what feels right. You can even just pick one or two senses and focus on just those. The point is you are grounding in the now rather than in the chaos that can so easily be formed in the mind. We talk about speaking with kindness towards others, but what about ourselves? We walk around with wounds from our childhood without realizing how they impact our perception of ourselves. if you agree! Sure you knew parenting would be hard, but perhaps you didn’t realize it would be THIS hard! Oh, the places your feelings can take you! One moment you can feel pure joy feeding your child and the next moment the phone is ringing, while your other child is re-enacting a movie from start to finish, and you suddenly notice the pile of mail that hasn’t been touched, and the toys scattered all over the floor and a flood of emotions just hits you... a flo...od of overwhelm... responsibility... loneliness... rage... powerlessness. If that describes you, you are so not alone! This gig is truly hard. And we heard that it takes a village to raise a child, but most don’t have that village. And Instagram moms with the picture perfect homes get praise, yet we know there’s no such thing as perfect and super mom is just as make believe as a unicorn. It’s crucial to make space for the feelings and express them safely. Your feelings are valid too. Have you ever been surprised my the message your child has taken away from you? Or were shocked when they mimicked your behavior? We’re constantly planting seeds. Our kids are definitely sponges. What we teach them most through our behaviors is that our behaviors are acceptable (unless we come back and acknowledge our error). ... Beyond the over behaviors we also have a message through more subtle behaviors... like the use of a certain tone or posing a boundary we’re trying to set as a question rather than a statement. We know it is easier said than done... But it is so important for us to incorporate our own needs into the relationship. When we lose the ability to draw boundaries and create a space for ourselves, we begin to make our children feel that the whole world revolves around them and will continue to revolve around them. Also, not making space for ourselves will just lead us to burnout more quickly. Consider your daily routine and when you can weave in some time for yourself, al...ongside your child. This may look like reading a book, while your child is coloring or exercising, while your child plays or even joins in on your exercise routine. You will likely need to be flexible in terms of first practicing this, since your little one is just learning how to navigate some time on their own. If your child is not independently playing yet, this would be the place to start. Helping them learn bit by bit how to play without your help, so that you can read, exercise, call a friend ,or whatever else your heart desires. Know that you are not alone, and this is challenging for many parents to navigate. We are here to support you. Feel free to browse our blogs for other tips. When we are interacting with our children, we may hear a voice that judges their behavior, worries about who they are turning into, or is embarrassed because of how they may be reflecting on us. These thoughts and feelings can keep us stuck in our own minds and thus unable to support our child in their moment of struggle. When we focus on stopping the tantrum, it is like we are focusing on stopping emotional expression. Yet we know tantrums can be incredibly hard to tolerate for many parents, especially when it is experienced in addition to many other stressors. As parents, it is important to remember that tantrums are not a personal attack on us or a refusal to practice coping skills. Tantrums are actually a response to stress and communication around our children's current abilities to handl...e this stress. Tantrums are actually an expression of feelings and experiences. When we can view them more neutrally, we are likely able to tolerate them better. When both parent and child have their stress response triggered, also known as the fight our flight center of the brain, there’s a struggle. Often parent or child may feel the need to yell, blame, or withdraw. We cannot access the logical part of the brain until we can calm our stress response. This takes practice and understanding of what helps calm each individual. We provide support in helping families address these challenges by creating new patterns of being.
