Fin loves his pupscicles during his acupuncture. Lots of drool on the floor. But when Fin gets his pupscicles, so does his brother Buddy. First picture is Fin drooling and enjoying some electoacupuncture, second is Buddy, who pushed his pupscicle to the back of the sofa and wedged it between cushions. Didn't slow either of them down. (Pupscicles are frozen jars of meat baby food...doggies usually love it and they can't eat it too fast because it's frozen)
Ziggy has a torn ligament in his knee and he'll either eat a pupsicle or fall asleep during his acupuncture. Such a love bucket!
Well, not exactly a new study as it's from August 2016, but it's from a respected publication and it holds up. With the huge opioid dependence epidemic in the US, why isn't this being offered as one of the first options for many conditions in people? And studies have also shown the same pain relieving effects in animals. http://beforeitsnews.com//acupuncture-beats-injected-morph
Interesting how acupuncture is becoming accepted by the human side of medicine....hope the veterinary side follows soon! "New guidelines from the American College of Physicians say the first line of therapy should be non-drug treatments. For pain lasting less than three months, those include heat wraps, massage, acupuncture and spinal manipulation. For pain lasting more than three months, treatments include stretching and strengthening exercises, tai chi, yoga, acupuncture, and mindfulness techniques like meditation to relieve stress." http://www.cbsnews.com//new-guidelines-how-to-handle-back/
My newest patient Deuce with his mom Holly. He has chronic back problems and has had 2 sessions so far. He was much calmer this week than last week (beginner's nerves, I think). Mom said she saw some response after his first treatment! Can't wait to hear about this week.
I was doing an acupuncture treatment on his sister when the normally shy and standoffish Davey decided he wanted to give me a bunch of hugs and head butts. I think he's thanking me for helping Riga feel better.
Brunhilde has degenerative myelopathy, a progressive neurologic problem, seen in German Shepherds, involving her spinal cord. She gets acupuncture every 5-6 weeks and her mom says that has helped keep her condition stable and and her activity level high. And Brunhilde loves eating her pupsicles during treatment. Such a sweet girl!

Good information about the science behind acupuncture. http://www.veterinarypracticenews.com/4-Myths-About-Acupun/
The article is a little involved and clinical, but if you scroll down and read the "in my opinion" section, it sums up the benefits in people and animals. http://www.cliniciansbrief.com//acupuncture-support-veteri
