The Homeless Education Office is seeking sponsors for the 13th annual Sponsor A Family. Sponsor A Family helps bring the magic of the holidays to our families experiencing homelessness. This year we hope to support approximately 300 identified families across the six Local Districts through bringing families essential resources during the holiday season. We invite you to join in with your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor a family for the holidays. Your generous do...nation will provide gift cards for food, winter clothing and toys for LAUSD students and families. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, holiday packages (i.e., gift cards for food, clothing, hygiene items, toys, etc.) will be matched to meet each family’s specific needs. https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx Sponsors will be asked to select sponsorship commitment from the following packages (suggested amount of $75.00 per family member).

With many restaurants impacted by the growing number of cases of COVID-19 across the region, I want to encourage all of you to support Uptown Restaurants by ord...ering takeout and eating local. Whether you are in the mood for seafood, barbeque, ramen, Peruvian Cuisine, or something else, it’s all here in Uptown! Small businesses like these are anchors of our community. They are our friends, our neighbors, and make important contributions to our community culture, and our local economy. We are in this together. Earlier today, we received reports of a brush fire off the 91 FWY and Long Beach Blvd. I want to thank our Long Beach Fire Department for their quick response a...nd Compton Fire Department and LA County Fire Department for their assistance. They were able to ensure the damage was minimal, as at this time, there are no injuries reported. Although the fire's cause is still under investigation, this is the result of an on-going issue that I have brought before the City Council and our state legislators. The neglect of state easements and rights-of-way during the COVID-19 pandemic is entirely inexcusable, as they pose hazards to public safety. This is not the first brush fire to occur in our District, and we are fortunate that no lives or property were lost today. I have engaged our State leaders over the past few months regarding these concerns, and I am calling on them to work with the State Legislation Committee to propose a solution for on-ramp and easement maintenance. We cannot allow the disrepair of rights-of-way to be the standard in Uptown or any other part of Long Beach. We need CalTrans to step up and do their part in keeping our community both safe and clean.
